Just having a look through the assorted media predictions for 2010 season . How accurate do you think they will be ?

A few predictions in the 2010 Season Guide to where quite a few considered North to be vulnerable team to possibly drop out of the 5 this year.

Cant argue with any of the 2 predictions above.

Pretty much 3 groups of 3.

1. Sturt, Central, North - certainties for finals
2. Glenelg, Eagles, West - the unknown qty
3. Norwood, Port, South - certainties to miss finals

Personally im not so sure about North yet, no doubt they have a brilliant side on paper but they had a good side on paper last year as well.

I have two question marks over North one being their defence, i tend to think there a tad bit small back there, they can throw Gill or White or in defence but i can see them two playing yo yo roles this year which could unsettle the side a bit.

The other question mark i have is their midfield, while they have guys that can get lots of the ball they don't tend to hurt other sides as much as they should, i know it's only a trial game but against the Dogs they had almost 100 more possesions yet had less scoring shots. There midfield doesn't hurt teams on the scoreboard enough imho.

I would love to know how many goals their midfielders kicked compared to other teams, SPELLY?

While agree in principle that there are 3 groups of 3, BUT injuries could decimate any of those in your top 6 and Port/Norwood could pull a rabbit out of the hat?

I would be very surprised if South managed to finish higher than7th though.

Agreed, 'certainty' is the wrong word. 'Probable' a better one.

Yes injuries affect the ladder, so to does AFL listed players playing in the SANFL. It is possible that the Magpies could have Cloke, Maric, Trengrove and Ebert playing for the Magpies for alot of the season.

What a pickup that would be for the Magpies!!

I saw Francou's bit on the telebox last night explaining why Ebert doesn't fit into the Power's best 22 and it was hard to argue.

Shame for him because he's so talented. Hopefully he dominates the SANFL though!

Believe it or not whufc I agree with you in the main!

Our defence will depend upon the availability of Davis which looks the case early on at least. With him in the back pocket and McIntyre and White at FB and CHB then our size and height is fine. Take Davis out and we are left with Cunningham and Gallman to play on the third tall fwds which they do well from time to time but over a season may be asking too much? Pollock may come into consideration at some stage if we need additional height without Davis being available?

According to Healy he will keep White at CHB and Gill up fwd although Gilly could go back if we had the case where Stewart, Wundke and Alleway are all vying for fwd spots?

I think our midfield is better than last year in terms of grunt and speed and I think the quality and amount of touches that Allan, Archard, Wright, Elstone will pick up and along with the pace of Ryswyk and Connors should see plenty of inside 50 ball for our fwds who most teams will (or should) have trouble matching up on if they are all fit and firing. We also have the likes of Younie who can still play a burst in the midfield along with Thiele and James Bennett so I don't think that is a problem to be honest.

Where I think we still have a slight problem is the mental application against teams like Centrals and Glenelg who go at you hard all day and stop that smooth flow we like and going by the stats from last weeks trial game too much side ways mucking about possession footy (which probably accounts for the 100 touches) instead of a more direct style? Also our tackling needs to improve significantly to apply the same pressure back on teams. 18 tackles in a game such as the Centrals trial game is just not acceptable even allowing for the fact it was a trial played in warm weather!

On paper we do look top 3 but as we all know you don't play football on paper!

Agreed with both of you, whilst we do have a great forward line it's hard to kick goals if they're all playing across centre with 10-15 players covering them.

If Norths fowards are firing and they can have Damon White at CHB all year that will be a massive bonus, the bloke would be an absolute rock down there and would be the general of the backlines. Would love to have him at chb in the red white and blue.

I still believe the North midfield need to kick more goals, i understand thats what the forwards are there for but imho this is been the big difference between Central and the rest over this decade, even if the Dogs forward line isn't functioning or the other team have the match ups perfect the midfielder such as Gowans, Bello, O'Sullivan, Slade, Sansbury and Callinan have been able to kick multiple goals. It's such a luxury to have and gives the side so many different options.

Also think the signing of Elstone is a great bit of business by Healy will add NATURAL hardness at the ball, is proven at SANFL level and won't come under the import rule next season either.

Honestly North wouldn't surprise me if the made the GF, but wouldn't be shocked either if they finished 6th, shaping up for a brilliant SANFL season this year.

Agree with what you say mate but I wouldn't be blaming the players in the midfield but the style we now play as most of the time our players are directed to play across the full back and centre half back lines. Hopefully that plan gets a tweak this year but we are very defensive.
