NFC wrote:Just got home. Sad thing is, Norwood are normally pretty good in trial matches. :? We were terrible, but at least we were missing many quality players, off the top of my head Trotter, Campbell, Zorz, Doyle, Young, sure many others.

South were extremely good though, the best I've seen them in ages. Committed, hungry, working for one another, plenty of voice, quick ball movement. Plenty of players impressed. They'll want to hold onto van Berlo though, he was outstanding.

I dont think south will see VB again. Clearly a class or 2 above everyone on the ground.

Yep, agree with that list. I'd add O'Keefe too, did some good things. I liked Lower sending him flat on his back though, one of very few highlights. ;)

Very impressed with Liddle. Looks as though he should be running around in the under 12s though.

Went down to the Parade tonight to watch both games, for those interested, here are the results, goal kickers and better players for both the Reserves and League game:

RESERVES FINAL SCORES:

NORWOOD: 4.2 - 10.3 - 13.5 - 16.11 = 107

PANTHERS: 3.3 - 6.3 - 9.4 - 11.7 = 73

Final Result: Norwood by 34 points

GOAL KICKERS:

NORWOOD: P.Kerin 5.1, T.Beilby 3.1, D.Terlich 2.2, J.Shaw 2.0, M.Fuller, T.Langford, N.Trevena 1.1, T.Jonas 1.0, M.Grigg 0.2, B.Thomas 0.1, Rushed 0.1

PANTHERS: J.Kennedy-Hunt 4.1, D.Joyce 2.1, M.Thomson 2.0, T.Butler 1.1, N.McKenna, K.Campbell 1.0, J.Perry, S.Gatson, K.Klemke, S.Elliot 0.1

BETTER PLAYERS:

NORWOOD: M.Fuller, M.Grigg, P.Kerin, T.Beilby, B.Thomas, T.Schulz, T.Jenkin, N.Trevena, A.Georgiou

PANTHERS: S.Elliot, K.Klemke, J.Johns, D.Joyce, J.Kennedy-Hunt, T.Redigolo

Norwood reserves boss Brian Beinke was not available to coach the side tonight so Nathan Bassett took the team for the first half then assistant coach James Thiessen took the reigns from their with some assistance from David Oatey, Tim Webber and David Trotter. Despite winning the game pretty easy in the end, Norwood were totally outclassed in the midfield, losing the majority of centre breaks but their defence stood tall and of course kicked more goals than the opposition. Also interesting to spot former SANFL umpire Derek Woodcock involved with the home side as the runner for the reserves team.

Norwood has some impressive youngsters in their forward line with young Patrick Kerin kicking 3 first quarter goals and finishing the game with 5 majors. Presents well as a key forward, has good goal sense and has a great set of hands. After kicking 6 goals last week against Central, Tom Beilby impressed once again, this time with 3. He has a real evasive nature to his game and can do the spectacular at times, although it can come across a bit 'show pony', he certainly adds some spark down there. Matt Fuller was also very good for the Legs on his wing.

Was also impressed with the pressure and discipline shown by former Central player Nathan Trevena, now playing with the Legs in 2010. The only sour note for the night was the horrific collision between two panther team mates. Young Luke Harrip came off worse for ware after copping a knock to the face and instantly his whole head and face was covered in blood. A serious gash on the cheekbone (I think) resulted in a lot of blood being spilt, kind of reminded me of the James Hird incident in Perth a few years ago. I think he may have been taken to hospital, hopefully the young lad is okay.

NORWOOD: S.Rowe 2.3, C.Shenton 1.1, B.Jeffries 0.2, N.Lower, S.Phillips, L.Nitschke, T.Baust 0.1

Was really impressed by the Panthers tonight and conversly as disappointed in Norwood, especially after last week's 10 goal win over Central. The legs seemed to go away from their direct style of play, coming through the middle of the ground and putting thr ball into space for forwards to lead into. Tonight the Legs were too hap-hazard with their ball movements and players like Josh Donoghue and Cameron Shenton, who kicked 8 goals between them the week before, had very quiet nights under the Parade lights. Veteran Tim Weatherald was the Legs best player on the ball while Nick Lower had plenty of it through the middle and across half back while Sam Rowe tried hard all night in attack.

For the Panthers, they were lucky to have the services of Crows listed Nathan Van Berlo and he proved tonight he is a step above this level. He was superb through the midfield and worked well around the ground with his team mates. Threw his body on the line on all occasions and used the ball well. Newly appointed skipper Ben Warren showed there will be no issue leading the team as a key forward, getting up the ground a fair bit throughout the night and the leading all scorers with 4 majors. Young Crows recruit Daniel Talia started the game at CHF and presented well creating a contest and working well in the forward line, just perhaps needs to work on his kicking for goal.

It really was the interstae recruiting brigade that led the way for the Ron Fuller coached side with Guy O'Keefe, Andrew Horne, Nick Liddle, Xavier Gotch and at times Nathan Lyons, all giving the visitors same pace and grunt through the middle of the ground. O'Keefe will be a very good player at this level, works very hard off the ball and does all the 1%'ers very very well. Andrew Horne is a very good tackler and uses the ball well while his fellow former Coburg team mate Nick Liddle runs the lines well and delivers the ball into attack with precision. The Panthers will certainly take a lot of confidence over this win while no doubt Nathan Bassett will be hoping to get players back from injury to settle that line up ahead of round 1 next week.

As much as its good to see South finally get a win on the board, it still is only a trial match and the scoreboard is nothing to get to excited over! - Encouraged to see that young Curtis Perry snagged a goal for the Panthers, he is a local lad that has come up through the Reserves who has something about him which suggests he has what it takes to play at League level, I think Rons coaching is just right for him and it will be interesting to see him earn his place in the League side this season!

I don't get to many games being a west coaster but I wondered at times if it was South Adelaide I was watching. Our work off the ball when not in posession was simply unSouth like. Forward line pressure was really good and we were certainly more structured than I have ever seen us before. Ron has definitely made an immediate impact in my opinion and while tonight means absolutely zero the signs are good that we will at least make the opposition earn anything they get.

Man were the old Norwood cronies sitting in the south west pocket biased or what...... Cracked me up all night!!

Based on that results I think the "pre-season ladder" as at this morning is
2-0 - North & West
1-1 - Port, Eagles, Sturt, Central
1-2 - Norwood, South
0-2 - Glenelg

Yeah, Ben was very impressive last night, I think he was pretty keen to impress in his first outing as skipper. As I mentioned above, I was impressed that he didn't just isolate himself in the square, he was working well across CHF and even up towards the wing. This was evident in that he didn't just kick 4 goals from 5 or 6 stats, he was aomngst the stat leaders with 20 possessions.

And now worries Wedgie !!!

I must say that the surface at Norwood was first class. Probably the best I've seen there.

Totally agree, especially considering no more than a couple of months ago there was a baseball diamond and pitchers mound down the southern, or Parade end. Well done to the groundsmen.

I know it was only a trial so who cares about the result, but why would Norwood updrade their lights when it seems like they can't win a game when it get's dark???
