ICE BATHS

Last year sometime I remember reading an article about someone who converts the 240L bins into functioning Ice baths. Just wondering if anyone knows who does this or has any suggestions/contacts for ice baths...... and/or what do other clubs use as ice baths?????

Most SANFL clubs take with them when playing away games 3 or 4 240 lt Wheelie Bins - best with the wheels off though.

Fill them 2/3rds with water, throw in 3 or 4 bags of ice and there's your ice bath.

6 minutes per player after the game and jobs done. Helps if you have little step ladders or something to get in them - especially for the short fellas. Advisable for the players to keep their socks on or wear "diving booties" as your feet freeze.

If the team is very close, you can get 2 players in each bin.

I'm personally not a fan of the wheelie bin - OH&S issue waiting to happen

Part of my "terms" of going to Hope Valley is that a proper ice bath was built (and it was ) It can fit about 4 blokes in at the same time.

For those that don't have diving booties - rubber gloves over the feet work too

I have the same issues witht he wheelie bin ice bath, however if you could modify it with a step on the inside it would be easier to get in and out of, and from what I was told whoever converts these does place a step on the inside, but I have no idea who does these modifications.......might have to get the Ol' President onto it for me.......

i know wheelie bins arent the best option, but if it your clubs only option a milk crate in the bottom of the bin helps the shorter lads get in and out. and it doesnt displace any water.

i personally think they are brilliant. make you feel 10fold better after a game.


i know there is also a company that makes blow up ice baths. Norwood have them in their rooms ill find out who makes them.

I think you should get a kiddie pool and put it in the middle of the rooms after a game so Balla and I can swan around naked in it

we have a couple at the Grove soccer club, just used your standard wheelie bin, inserted at tap connection at the bottom to drain the water and bolted them to the floor in the changerooms with a steps next to them, we also bought an ice making machine for like $200 dollars, makes 10kg of ice with in five minutes it's brilliant, we only use ours for training.

We just use a huge plastic tub a bloke nicked from his work. Four blokes can stand it in at a time, when full the water only comes up just above the waist so it's easy to get out of, and has the plug in the bottom to drain the water. Wheelie bins are a pain in the ass if not custom made for it.

The last thing I can do after a game is physically get in and out of a bin when I'm sore...

A combination of both an Ice Bath after the game and then the beach the next morning is the best recovery method. Hope to see more of our ice bath this season, i love that thing.

We have got a big crate that the wineries use for carting grapes. It already had a hole in the bottom so we just put a tap on it and plumbed it into the existing plumbing. Can get about 4-5 people (depending on size) sitting or kneeling in it at any one time. Works a treat.

I don't like them full stop. I have felt far worse after using them than doing nothing at all.

Ice baths arent real practical for a lot of country clubs as many are amalgamated clubs and therefore would need to cart the wheelie bins to their 2 or 3 home grounds and away games could be 1 to 2 hours away so it creates difficulties lugging them there as returning to your local clubrooms often doesnt happen. I reckon the principle is great though.In fact Id love to hear about other options.
ie Mate was an assistant coach at Oakleigh Chargers U 18s back a bit and said they used to file blokes through a series of showers alternating hot and cold 30 seconds cold, 30 seconds hot etc. Could be done using single shower too I spose. Other ideas?
