Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, has said he is "sure" Pakistan players will return in future editions of the league, despite none of them attracting any bids from the franchises during the auction on January 19. Angered by the manner in which the 11 Pakistan players were ignored, Pakistan sports minister Aijaz Hussain Jahkrani and PCB chairman Ijaz Butt had said that their players would stay away from the Champions League Twenty20 this year and the 2011 season of the IPL.

The ICC president-in-waiting Sharad Pawar has met with Bal Thackeray, leader of the right-wing political party Shiv Sena, asking him to stand down on his earlier remarks about the safety of Australian players during the third season of the IPL. This follows a warning issued by the Mumbai-based regional party that Australians will be barred from playing matches in Mumbai in response to the recent attacks on Indians living in Australia.
Pawar, also president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, was accompanied by current Indian board president Shashank Manohar to Mumbai to meet with Thackeray and his son Uddhav, and the four sat behind closed doors for an estimated two hours. "We presented our viewpoint before Thackeray on this critical issue," Manohar told reporters. "We tried to convince him that only one or two Australian players will participate in the IPL matches and by not allowing all IPL matches it is the state players [Marathi players] who will lose ultimately.
The two Australian players who are part of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians are Dominic Thornely and Luke Ronchi.

A day after the Rajasthan Royals announced plans to create the first global sport alliance, the BCCI has reacted warily to the move. Rajasthan revealed they had tied up with Hampshire, Cape Cobras, Trinidad and Tobago and an Australian domestic team to form a worldwide Twenty20 brand but the Indian board's chief administrative officer, Ratnakar Shetty, said they had "not sought permission" to take such a step.


"Rajasthan Royals have not written to us and have not sought permission on this," Shetty told Times of India. "In case the Indian cricketers, who are contracted with the board, have to participate, they'll have to seek our permission. We have not heard anything from anyone as yet and the players can't take part unless we give them the permission."


Rajasthan, however, said the IPL was in the know and they were confident there would be no conflict of interest with the league. "The IPL has been aware of our plans and have been nothing but supportive. We know exactly where we stand and there has never been an intention to create any sort of conflict with the BCCI," the franchise said.

Greg Shipperd is trying to keep his eyes on two competitions in different hemispheres as one domestic competition winds down and another takes off. Shipperd is the coach of the Delhi Daredevils during his normal off-season, but a change in IPL dates means his return to the tournament has been delayed by his Victorian team's hosting of the Sheffield Shield final from Wednesday.

In a major setback to the Rajasthan Royals, their opener Graeme Smith has been ruled out of the IPL due to a finger injury, as has allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas after turning his ankle. Smith fractured his right middle finger while fielding during Monday's match against Delhi Daredevils in Ahmedabad, and is now in a race to be fit in time for the ICC World Twenty20 which starts on April 30. Mascarenhas hurt his ankle during his run-out in the same game, but put in a brave effort with the ball, taking two wickets off successive deliveries

The Delhi Daredevils fast bowler Ashish Nehra will continue to miss the initial few weeks of the IPL due to a rib injury he picked up during training in Mohali last week. Eric Simons, Delhi's assistant coach, confirmed Nehra would be out of action for as long as two weeks but added he had faith in the support cast

The financial might of the IPL was on display again on Sunday when Pune and Kochi became the league's two new franchises, being sold for a value in excess of the original eight franchises combined.

The Sahara group, the biggest patron of sports in the country, became owners of the Pune franchise after offering a staggering US$370m. The other new franchisee is a consortium of five companies called Rendezvous Sports World, which bid US$333.33m for Kochi. There were three other qualified bidders, including Adani Enterprises and VC digital solutions Pvt Ltd (Videocon), who were in the fray to become part of the IPL, which will be heartening for any existing franchise owners looking to offload their stake.

Wayne Parnell, the Delhi Daredevils fast bowler, has been ruled out of the IPL because of a groin injury and will fly to South Africa this week. He sustained the injury during a warm-up and will be assessed by Cricket South Africa's medical staff on his return.
There was another injury worry for South Africa with Chennai Super Kings' Justin Kemp hurting his back during the game against Kings XI Punjab. He left the field after bowling one ball and could not bat at his normal position.

Damien Martyn, the former Australian batsman, has headed home after being excluded from a trimmed Rajasthan Royals squad. He played only one game in the tournament after being surprisingly picked at the IPL auction, despite being out of top-level cricket for several years.

Rajasthan Royals have drafted Victoria batsman Aaron Finch into their squad for the 2010 IPL season. Rajasthan lost Graeme Smith and Dimitri Mascarenhas to injuries but Finch was included because they had an extra overseas slot free, and not as a replacement player.
