I got to the Northern end of West Lakes and decided to fish the beach nearest the sea. That was a mistake a few rises no fish and a confusing wind that made casting hard.
So after wading and casting this beach I decided to swap sides right when the Dragon Boats were setting up for a race meeting !!!!
Deciding quickness was better than slow and steady .I set on my way once I could get back into the water .Dodging Dragon boats sea rescue boats and kayaks!!!
As I was casting and wading I lost four tiny Bream .
But then wham bam
Image
A 26cm Bream off the surface and my new surface PB!!!
After a chat with the locals and some dragon boat racers I was off
And on with a smaller fish of 20cm that actually fought better .
Image
I borrowed a locals tiny to take the snap :)
After that there were lots of small fish rising and I dropped a couple of fish .And of course the wind changed direction and cooled down a bit .
That was my Sunday morning flick :)

Anyone been fishing down there? Got any suggestions?

Arno Bay and Pt Neill is the go. This is only a tiddler. I have caught some absolute thumpers over there.

Not bad for a bloke who can't even tie a rig.

Not sure if any of the guys here are into comp fishing but if you are......

Tony Martin and I will be at the Swan Reach hotel Saturday night to take registrations for the first event.
You can also pay your club membership at this time.
We are planning on setting up in the outdoor area behind the dining room.
It would be good to get this done that night for those that are staying the night.
We would also encourage people to stay at the caravan park. Only $11 powered site.
Registrations will also be taken Sunday morning at the reserve just down stream of the boat ramp.
Start time 6.30 am so registrations in by about 6.15am.

I'm heading to Overland Corner tomorrow to hopefully catch a few nice Callop. If not, well there's always the cold beer. Win/win situation really.

I tried a couple of different beaches at the lake this morning down the southern end.I wont be going back again in a hurry!! And then went to two beaches I have fished before .At the same time there was an ABT Kayak bream comp on .So pickings were slim .The wind while not strong was sticky half way along each beach it would change directions !!!Very hard to cast at times .
And not every fish I catch is a PB
fish 1 my smallest Bream or fish ever on a fly today
Image
And this fish fell to a popper fly at beach number 3 first two beaches got zilch .The fly is almost longer than the fish!!
Fish 2 slightly bigger at 16cm well probably double or so in size.It did fight well and was hooked well through the lip
Image
Fish 3 I didnt bother to measure smaller than number 2 but bigger than number 1 .It fell after 9.30am well past good popper fishing time !!
Image

And that as they say was that I kept wading and casting but by 10am I had had enough .
Cheers

Jas that was hard work today four beaches and no fish at 2 of them .Seems they like to take my popper flies from the surface. But only in a wind or when the water is disturbed!!
Only started using them towards the end of last years Bream season!!
The bream kayak fishing comp made it hard this morning.I find if I fish an area after a lure guy has gone through they NORMALLY dont take a fly .
But then from the guys I chatted with this morning some of them were having a worse time than me .And some of those guys are professional lure fishers !!!

And I'm getting guys wanting to buy my poppers !!! tell them why bother u got a vice just tie one your self they are very simple ;)
As I said to a couple of yak guys who were telling me about a great fly tier we all know .I can't tie any where like him but my flies keep me going ;)

We got plenty of small mulloway, mate, but the closest we got to legal was 42cm.

We did get 5 nice Bream - 43,42,40,37 and 28cm.... a first for me - the guy I fish with has caught one on trips with me before but the first time we have got multiple fish and my first Bream down there too.... Great fun to catch - we dropped at least that many again too.

We also got a few salmon trout, one mullet and one nice flathead... Will post some pics of the Bream once I get them from my mate.

After my Homer Simpson moment yesterday(something to do with joining knots breaking and not being able to tie another one until I got home then I tied 3  ) .The wind wasn't really strong enough for the surface action I craved .
So I walked two and half beaches for this little 20cm Bream and I still couldn't get the annoying Garfish to play .And the Gar were a jumping at one beach !!
Image
And me trying an in the hand shot didnt quite work
Image

And a couple were having a very nice picnic valentines breakfast under the trees not far from where I caught this Bream.

But the wind dropped and that was my two hours !!

After being sick last weekend and sitting in the grandstand at Noarlunga yesterday .I was bursting at the seams for a fish today. With a forecast of 20-30 knot winds from the south east. And my daughter laughing at me when the weathers good you can't go and when its bad you can. ;) :P
But I was thinking wind water movement perhaps a big fish today.
Yeah well first off I was on the wrong side of the lake the wind was just blowing my fly back onto land when cast.
So a change of sides and I'm off .
Wasn't that good lots of small fish jumping .Even saw the largest PRAWN in my life at the lake jump jump and jump out the water.I cast my popper nothing .then another metre on and bam three or four small /tiny fish tail spit the fly .A larger Bream jumped but missed .
Then I'm on with a bigger bream lasted all of a minute damn thing spat the fly .I swear I set that damn hook  .
So on the next cast I'm on with a small fish landed this one .
Image
Image

Tried the next beach along lots of tiny fish jumping but nothing big would strike .
And that was it most of three beaches fished for a tiny fish .
But take it from me the wind in the grandstand at noarlunga was colder and stronger  :P

For those wondering about the comp - was a good day, not many fish, but we had 18 boats turn up which was a bit down on numbers but a few reasons for it. Tony Martin and Andrew Donhardt took out the winners title with 5 fish...

Back to fishing....

Hit the Coorong again on Sunday - pretty average - lots of ST's around if you are keen on them. We kept 22 plump ones - only kept the ones that were worth filleting. 2 undersize Mulloway, no Bream.

We had 30 anglers across 17 teams turn up. Despite the heat forecast we ended up with an awesome day weather wise. Unfortunately for most teams the fish forgot to turn up so fish numbers were down.

The top 3 received prizes including fishing charters thanks to GLENELG FISHING CHARTERS, magazine subscriptions from WILD COAST FISHING MAGAZINE, and cash thanks to CCWM REFRIGERATION, TEA TREE GULLY COFFEE SHOP and RED DEVIL ENERGY DRINKS.

All competitors received a goody bag containing information from PIRSA Fisheries and some spinnerbaits and wine from STUART WALSH who also took some of the captured Callop live for future stocking.

The club secretary is preparing a full report on the event which will be posted as soon as it is done.

It was great to see so many people supporting the future of the club with 23 of the 30 competitors signing up as full members for the 2010 season. This allowed us to meet our insurance obligations as well as banking some money for the future running of the club.

Re: FISHING

Postby Iron Fist » Mon May 31, 2010 10:35 am

Went fishing fri night, was meant to do saturday morning but the seas were no good, so we went out for a bit fri night.
Im my mates old mans boat we went probs 4km off shore to a spot where he had got some snapper before.
dropped out lines and sat back and waited, probs after 25mins my lines just started screaming, boy was I excited cause ive never been or caught a snapper before.
So started the fight, Was getting told what to do by mates old man and he asked what it was doing etc, was giving this shark rod I was using a work out so we thought it was gonna be huge one.
After a nice long fight finally got it towards the top of water and found that it was a massive ray, would have been 5ft + wide and been atleast 12kg,
Disapointing as I thought I had a snapper but still good to catch something big, got it to the side of boat but was to big to bring n board, would have just gone crazy so we just cut the line in the end.

Hopefully we will go out again soon and I will have a snapper to show for the trip!
get on board the thunder train!!!

Me and Mrs_Dog_ger was down at the birkenhead tavern a few weeks back and this guy pulls up with some sort of canoe/kayak.

Puts it in the water. & it is Pedal powered. Fishing rod and all the extras.

Cut through the water with no resistance....

Zoomed off with little effort.

Fabulous idea. Where would I get one of these..?

He looked like he enjoyed himself.

I wanted to talk to him but he was so well organised, he was gone before I could get my act together.

I hope your paying attention Mickyj..? My Friend.

I haven't been out in a few weeks due to the weather dogger.
What you saw is probably a hobie kayak or something similar they have been the rage for the last couple of years. Some guys are very well equipped GPS live wells(i only know this I chatted with a couple of blokes in the lake from over the border here for a comp a few months back) etc etc
Not certain how they land the big ones but they do :)
did u get any ST'S dogger the port and the lake is supposed to be teaming with them.
May have a cast Saturday morning weather permitting.
