Peter Hoban, the former Adelaide 36er basketballer, really impressed me for the Eagles in the reserves game...

The lad has a great natural leap and while he took the opportunity to give off an easy handpass to team mates running past, he used his body well, showed some footy smarts and generally impressed considering it was only his 2nd game of footy ever...

Premiers wrote:For the Eagles, Cicollella was outstanding, the spiritual leader of the club who sets the tone with very strong attack on the body. Welsh showed his footy smarts setting up play for other forwards. Dale Grocke was strong again and is becoming leadership material. Stapleton positioned himself well to score 4 goals. Treeby in the new role as a rover was prominent. Jarrad was the biggest kick winner and used every possession well. Our small players, Jim Stewart, Rowntree, Cody Hicks and Goldsworthy were prominent around the ball-ups. South showed greater leg speed when in the open but the Eagles looked bigger, harder at the ball with faster ball movement and very impressive in the lastQ against the breeze.
On the down-side, 1. Jarrad Redden, admittedly on one performance on a windy day, still looked immature, hasn't bulked up much over 2 years and big Hoban must be eyeing that position 2. Full back looks very suspect and Handby looked too lively near goals - Grieger and Miles look very slow but Miles read the ball well, handballed off quickly and won many possessions - hate to think how someone like Nick Gill will run him ragged.
Next week against Centrals will give better idea but encouraging signs.

Columbo wrote:Cheepy looked good on the wing, Welsh wasnt super busy but good and kicked 3, Staple kicked 4.
Seb Guilhaus played well in the ruck got and did a bit around the ground.
Luke Jarrad played back and took alot of the kickins.
Powelly and Treeby will be better for the run
.

Firstly lets start by saying its feb27 and it was just a trial game. And it was just against South .
Some signs that the new game plan/style is still getting into the players head. But when it worked it looked good .When it didnt work the Eagles returned to the older style that south were playing. And of course that's when South scored their goals. As the scoreboard shows after half time that didn't happen often.
Now I was calling for most of the 2009 season for Cheep to be played on the wing .And today all be it getting very tired in the fourth quarter he proved me right.
Seb added something lacking in our ruck division in 2009 which of course made the midfield appear very very very good. But once again I'll reserve judgement until either the season proper or we face a much better opponent .While on Seb either Rhett Biglands or one of the coaching staff needs a very big pat on the back .I for a very long time had grown very bored with what the ruck/midfield division had be doing .But watching Seb he wasn't afraid to change things some worked and others didn't.But well done on the game .I would to say I think J Redden is not up to SANFL league let alone AFL at this stage of the season.Hoben may called in next week due to Reddens knee injury.
Forward line that was interesting Welsh did a small amount but that freed up young gun Staple who had a field day .And Symons mark in the last was that a freaky mark or what !!
And once again enjoyed the new move the ball faster game plan/style when it worked .This will only get better as the weeks go byIMHO.
For South it was good to see they had a simple game plan that should win games in the future .But like the Eagles have found out will struggle against running sides like sturt etc.
Anyone else notice the high number of VFL/Victorian recruits playing in Souths Seconds .
Forgot to mention it was great to catch up with Columbo and Mrs Columbo,CD and of course kept those of us sitting near the stats entertained .And I had a few nice chats with our two Phils.Hope to see everyone next friday night

Bass was one of the stories of the day. For a guy that has never played a game of football before (at any level) he showed some great signs; albeit was not rucking against much. Other highlights were new on-ballers Liddle (might be as good as any mid-fielder in the comp) and O'Keefe who have some real zip. Suggest they have well and truly replaced Boyd, but these guys don't seen to contract a cramp, or get shot from the grandstand, every time they miss a goal or a target like their ompa-lumpa predecessor!

Quickest I have seen South for many years. Eagles were generally bigger and stronger which will be an issue for South all year, although I understand 6-7 that played league today were provideda game due to "doing all the right over the pre-season". That's fine, but suggest most will not play league again, and when you throw back in Warren, Sandery, Horne, Gotch, Joyce, Williams, etc we might get a better read on how we are tracking. Also Port Rookie Jordan Johns appeared a faor way off still.

Not good enough today, but looking forward to lessons learned and vastly differant starting line up on two weeks time v the Maggies ... if they still exist!

Hoben will be a gun until he gets drafted.
Warren for south in the two's certainly looked underdun .Which probably helped the Eagles slightly.
The new cult hero English even impressed and he is so thin we thought the wind would blow him over ;) Not sure why Port let him go unless it was money reasons!!

Thought Talia did a good job. Certainly some players in the reserves that will be pushing into the League side soon. Not sure what you saw Bunton, but I thought Bass was totally outplayed today by Gilhouse and Redden. Acknowledge that he hasn't played before but to have a go at the Eagles ruckmen altogether?? You must just hate Eagles ruckmen! (Fair enough...)

Good signs for our Club though.

I thought the Eagles looked pretty good. If Welsh plays all year he'll kick 70+.

Bunton could have a go at Redden all day if he wanted, for an afl listed player well below last years standard .Miles when he took over showed his class .
Seb was just great IMHO something lacking last year.
If welsh plays u could be correct Klann if staple keeps going could do the same .

Bass.....some encouraging signs.....big lad.....plenty to learn.......and unbelievably it was only his second game of Aussie rules.....

Danial Talia looked impressive and did some good things.....called everyone mate as he didn't know any names.....an obvious problem that will improve with time......

thought the Eagles played a fast play on style and used the corridor well......

South used pace well but had no dominant forward to utilise their inside 50s.....

unlike Welsh and Staple who played well for the Eagles....

Went down to Noarlunga today to get my SANFL fix for the first time in 2010. For those interested, here are the scores, better players and my highlights from both games...

RESERVES:

SOUTH: 0.0 2.0 4.3 8.8 = 56

EAGLES: 1.5 3.8 6.10 7.12 = 54

Panthers by 2 points

GOAL KICKERS:

SOUTH: B.Warren 2.1, M.Leonard, S.Elliot 1.1, L.Bowd, S.Livingston, L.Schmidt, T.Johnson 1.0, X.Gotch 0.1, Rushed 0.4

EAGLES: G.Dawson 1.3, J.Polec 1.2, L.Thompson, S.Lewis, 1.1, L.McMahon, A.Matz, B.English 1.0, B.Smith, C.Fitzgerald, J.Brusnahan, A.Poole 0.1, Rushed 0.1

BETTER PLAYERS:

SOUTH: L.Bowd, L.Schmidt, D.Williams, S.Elliot, D.Joyce, B.Warren, X.Gotch

EAGLES: S.Lewis, J.Polec, J.Rimmington, P.Hoban, J.Allmond, L.Thompson

You could tell it was the first trial game for the year because at times the skill level from both sides was close to terrible. It was a tricky breeze to deal with that was basically blowing to the canteen on the hill down the North-East corner. Was very impressed with Luke Bowd on the ball, Leigh Schmidt up forward and the nippy D.Joyce for the Panthers. As mentioned, Ben Warren kicked the winner on the siren for South, he played reserves as he had a game of cricket to get to that afternoon for Langhorn Creek. Senior player Dylan Williams also won plenty of the ball across half back and used it well in windy conditions.

For the Eagles, former Blood and Tiger Scott Lewis racked up plenty of the ball and used it well through the midfield while the impressive and talented young 'Jarrad' brigade of Polec and Allmond also stood out for mine. James Rimmington was his usual hard at it self while Criag Fitzgerald impressed early before getting stretchered off with what looked to be a knee injury. Basketball convert Peter Hoban impressed with his natural leap in ruck which excited Eagles CEO Chris Davies while Adelaide Crows rookie Luke Thompson had a couple of classy moments including a very impressive running goal.

LEAGUE:

EAGLES: 4.1 8.2 12.6 15.10 = 100

SOUTH: 2.1 5.3 6.3 7.6 = 48

Eagles by 52 points

GOAL KICKERS:

EAGLES: L.Staple 4.0, S.Welsh 3.0, T.Lane 2.3, A.Grocke, J.Cicolella 2.0, J.Cheep 1.2, D.Simmons 1.1, T.Corbett, C.Hicks 0.1, Rushed 0.2

SOUTH: N.Liddle 2.1, N.Lyons, J.Kennedy-Hunt, G.O'Keefe, J.Turner, A.Cockshell 1.0, P.Rolfe, M.Handby, J.Veide, D.Bass 0.1, Rushed 0.1

BETTER PLAYERS:

EAGLES: L.Jarrad, J.Cicolella, L.Treeby, J.Cheep, L.Staple, A.Rowntree, D.Symmons, S.Hill, T.Corbett, S.Gilhaus

SOUTH: N.Liddle, G.O'Keefe, M.Handby, D.Talia, A.Cockshell, B.Crabb, A.Splitt, J.Turner

Great to have the footy back, even if it was a trial and for the Eagles, under debutant coach Mick Godden, a comfortable first up win to kick start the year. With still some very experienced Eagles players sitting out of this game, it was the more experienced players who impressed most for the victors. Luke Jarrad was sensational off half back and provided plenty of run and drive while Justin Cicolella showed he still has what it takes to have an impact at league level.

Despite the tricky conditions at the wind swept Noarlunga Oval, the Eagles were too strong for Ron Fuller's men and proved to have a very impressive forward line capable of kicking big scores. Scott Welsh impressed with 3 goals, until badly dislocating his finger late in the game not to return, and the very talented Lee Staple stood up across half forward to bag 4 majors to be the games leading scorer.

Adam Grocke provided a contest as always in attack while Jay Cheep, Leigh Treeby and Angus Rowntree were very effective when the ball was at ground level. Seb Gilhaus was valiant in ruck but still needs to work on his disposal while young Lee Staple proved to be a strong focal point in attack with 4 majors. A couple of big hits in the game with Tom Corbett and his South opponent colliding heavily while the lively Dale Symmons took a spectacular mark only to land flat on his back hurting himself. Stuart Hill was also impressive in defence as well providing some good run.

For the home side, new coach Ron Fuller would be very pleased with the performance from 2 of his Victorian recruits. Nick Liddle was very impressive on the ball and up forward, kicking 2 goals for the Panthers and showing he'll take the step up from VFL to SANFL very comfortably. Guy O'Keefe showed some good pace and aggression as well spending time both in the middle and up forward. Crows recruit Daniel Talia showed poise and good skills from half back while Adam Cockshell was servicable in ruck and sweeping across the defensive line.

A very fit looking Michael Handby had plenty of possessions but still needs to improve his disposal when under pressure while acting skipper Brad Crabb had some good moments in defence. There is an obvious improvement from the Panthers under Fuller's reign with more pace and run from his side but there still needs to be some work done on their disposal and work rate when they turn the ball over. All in all, just an average game of footy, which is to be expected for this time of year, but great to be back at the SANFL.

No. He played reserves as he missed part of the preseason due to honeymoon and as such must play twice at reserve level before eligible for selection.

Day seemed to play up forward early on Aerie then didnt see him again
Hill was solid down back in a pocket I think
Jimmy Stewart hurt a hammy or it felt like it was about to go I think I heard. He was off and iced up
Welsh dislocated a finger and went off late in the last .
Dale Symmons took a screamer in the last thought he done a hammy but think it was just very bad cramp. Now he had a game to dream about he played on ball and finished up down forward.
Angus rowntree could well have leather poisoning he had the ball that often.
Cica was almost a football god
And just for Ferret Ben English kicked a goal on the seconds .Was that $20 for every goal he kicks or only the one at training  :D ;)

That should get dedja going again ;)
