Giles

OK, so he's not the greatest bowler we've ever seen, but he seems to get a lot of stick for being "ordinary" - more than he probably deserves. IMO he is a pretty useful flight bowler, and I've never really understood the criticism.

Aussies do tend to struggle against taller spinners and especially the lefties, so I think the Poms were correct in picking him ahead of Panesar.

Anderson on the other hand may as well open a pie cart and be done with it.

yep, giles has a role and he does it ok..doesnt possess anything close to a warne or macgill, then again, no one will, but his height, bounce and accuracy get him by.

still tho, id like to get a look at this pommie turbinator (i think he wears one?) to see how he goes.

Noboby turns out more ordinary trundlers than the English County system. Giles is just another production line bowler designed to roll away for over after over to keep the runs down. There are guys playing B Grade cricket who are better bowlers in terms of ability. Giles' strength is his discipline to put the ball on a spot, hour after hour. He's never going to cause any great problems on pitches like the Gabba, and Martyn would be very annoyed with himself that he late cut a ball straight into the hands of Collingwood at 1st slip. If Panesar can flight and spin the ball, he MUST be selected in the last 4 Tests.

They should have picket monty panersar instead. He is the type of bowler that tries to and is capable of taking wickets. Probably not the best we have ever seen, but still not bad. Probably better value than giles.

Gidday bert. Have you seen Monty bowl mate? He's that much better Gilo it's not funny. You're right about Giles perhaps not deserving all of the stick he gets but there's no way Giles should have been selected ahead of Monty for the first test just because Giles bats better. The English supporters I spoke with at the ground were unaminously appalled by that selection and to me that is most telling.

Giles bowled better than expected in the first dig. Flighted the ball nicely, was consistent with length etc.
The result?
1/91

Tripe.

Giles got Martyn out, an excellent portfolio for Damien to reflect on.
He would struggle to make most of our state teams poor Ash.
He is not a match winner and makes a mockery out of Macgill not playing at test level.
Ash tries hard, is a competitor but surely Monty is a better proposition.

I disagree with that. IMHO, Martyn got Martyn out. He guided the ball off the face of the bat right into Collingwood's hands. It was just like catching practice.
