GONE: Brett Backwell's seven-year career at Glenelg is over.

BRETT Backwell’s career at Glenelg is over.

The Magarey Medal-winning midfielder will play for Waratahs in the Northern Territory Football League finals this Saturday, despite the Tigers warning him if he did, his seven-year stint at the Bay would end.

Tigers coach Mark Mickan said Backwell informed the club yesterday of his decision.

``Unfortunately that’s it. We made it very clear about what we required and Brett wasn’t prepared to do that,’’ Mickan said.

Mickan had given Backwell permission to play for Waratahs before Christmas, but Backwell played another two games this year without informing the club.

The 29-year-old met with the club’s football department on Monday to attempt to resolve the issue.

``He played an additional two games for Waratahs without seeking permission from Glenelg which contravened the agreement,’’ Mickan said.

``We spoke to Brett about that on Monday.

``I reminded him of our agreement and that we certainly wouldn’t be giving him permission to play anymore games.

``We’ve got a camp on this weekend followed by trials so we need him here.

``I told him either he made a full commitment to play and train for Glenelg or not.

``He made the choice to keep playing in the Northern Territory.’’

Mickan said he was disappointed to lose Backwell, who has been one of the Tigers’ best players since joining from West Adelaide in 2003.

``I am (disappointed). He’s been a wonderful player for Glenelg, a perennial state player, Magarey Medallist and best and fairest.

``And all though over the last couple of years his form has been a bit below par by his standards… he’s a player that we’ll miss because he certainly had something to offer as a midfielder and small forward.

``But we move on now, we have standards that we’ve set that we have to stick to.’’

Messenger Community News has been unable to reach Backwell for comment.

North have an abundance of quality on ballers this year and even though they have plenty of $$$ left in the cap ;) and going by some of the past season "stories' re Backwell and how much he wanted each season I don't think that North would seriously consider him to be honest.

It's official, Glenelg supporters are the biggest sunshiners going around. How you can possibly put a positive spin on this is beyond me. I am all for clubs maintaining standards, but FFS the lad wanted to play one more game in the top end before returning match fit and focused on Glenelg. There is a pretty hefty intangeable called 'morale' and this decision must surely put another dent in what is already a questionable atmosphere at the Bay.

Sturt set high standards for training and committment but if they were as rigid as the hierarchy at Brighton Road then the likes of Brant Chambers would have been sacked years ago. He, for example, has gone up North for work and footy almost annually over his Sturt career. Yes, he comes back a little late BUT he comes back fit and hungry. He is made to catch up and complete set training standards which he is happy to do.

Get your heads out of the sand boys, if all is really well at the Bay then I'm a Chinaman.

Get your facts right. Mouse played 2 extra unsanctioned games without the club's permission before the issue of this game came up. He broke the agreement with the club and was asked to confirm his commitment to the Bays. After all that he chose to play in NT.

So in the end he disregarded the club's wishes twice.

What's that saying about cutting one's nose off to spite one's face....?

I didn't get my facts incorrect, I realise the timeline of events. I just think if I was a Glenelg supporter (thank f*#k I'm not) I would be pretty disheartened at my club for letting a player go over playing footy over the summer. That's right, four extra games of footy, not a three week drink & drug bender in Vegas, EXTRA FOOTY!

LOL, each to his/her own and everyone can have their opinion.

It's not the amount or games or the conditions around it ... it's all about the fact that once an agreement was made between the club and the player, the player openly disregarded that agreement on 2 separate occasions, in full knowledge of the consequences.

If the player approached the club about extending the arrangement beforehand then he might have received a better hearing.

While sad the club had no choice and made the correct decision.

I dont understand how Chris Hall could come onboard late one year... another can quit and go Kayaking for a bit and decide he doesnt like it and wants back in once we made finals(Dan Kirk).... another bloke can go treking for 6 months and waltz back in just pre finals(Sam Rudolph)... yet a bloke who's only crime was to be playing a FOOTBALL FINAL rather than be on a club camp gets the chop....

I would have thought showing commitment and loyalty to your side was actually quite a valuable trait.

Im exceptionally disappointed that Mouse was placed in the position where he had to make a choice. The bloke was a shining light through our dark years. Mentored many a junior and was a terrific leader on the field. He was and is much loved by members. I would have thought for all his service that the club could actually cut him some slack. They cut him back to a one year reduce deal and he was allowed to go....

Its hypocritical considering decisions made by the GFC over recent years in similar cases.

I am very much hopeful this situation can be resolved as I truly believe Mouse deserved much much better.

Without knowing I feel the club might now recognising mistakes made over the past couple of seasons and why we didnt win any silverware, attitudes have to change, and if decisions like this bring us a flag, Im more than happy to support the club on this one.

Answer this - Would Centrals allow this?

I'd hope so. Apears on the surface to be an over reaction.
