Because there's an amount of money going into SANFL coffers from PAP home games at AAMI that is > than the money going out directly to the PAP currently as a "bail out". This is based on hearsay becayse I personally haven't seen the exact figures and it changes each time I read someone's guess.

Put it this way, there's a reason the SACA has been lobbying so hard to get PAP home games, even if only 25,000 people go and there's a reason no SANFL club or the SANFL itself has ever suggested this option.

It was reported in the media this week that something like $12m in revenue went into the SANFL from Port's home games last season.

And what's that figure after expenses/costs?

Let's say a Port home game generates $750K-$1M in revenue for the SANFL, depending on the attendance. Unless the attendance figure goes over a magic number (which Port have rarely achieved lately), the SANFL keeps all the match day revenue. So Port make a loss on the day but the SANFL make a killing. Port have (or close to) the worst stadium deal in the AFL.

No-one is lying ... it's consistent with the Port annual report and the SANFL match day arrangements as they stand today.

Where Port have got themselves into a hole is that their original business plan in 1997 anticipated home attandances of 30K+, but their average attendance figures are now closer to 20K. They are still making money for the SANFL but the SANFL will not revise Port's break-even attendance figure to compensate for the drop in attandances in the past few years.

So there is essentially a stand-off between Port and the SANFL on this break-even attendance figure.

There is no doubt Port are not providing the same revenue to the SANFL that they did in the early years, but they are still contributing significantly to the coffers of the SANFL today.

I see, if that is the case the SANFL better revise the situation pronto if they want to keep this cash cow alive and keep on milking it forever.

Port need to work out how to get more people to attend their matches ... moving to Adelaide Oval (if that ever happens) isn't the silver bullet though.

Or maybe Port need to look at why they cant get their "fans" to a game

Play some good, or entertaining, football would be a good start

This.

To my knowledge, the SANFL take all of catering (Whicker himself has a special deal here), most of signage etc. whilst palming off a lot of the expenses (wages, staff etc) onto the clubs. Thats why the SANFL can make a lot of money out of a Port game, whereas Port end up losing money as they have to pay the SANFL the difference of what they consider the break even point for the club.

So the money the SANFL is pouring back into Port, is simply money it has made from Port games anyway. Dropping the break even, would come to the same conclusion.

Port definitely need to improve crowds and this is issue number 1 for the club, but as it stands, even if the club improves its average attendance by a significant amount this year (say 5-7k) then they still will be making a loss or only barely a profit from home matches.

Macca, with respect, that is just not correct.

If the Power increase their crowds by 7-8K, they will make a very good profit out of a home game, including catering, etc.

I'd agree, from memory the break even attendance figure is 26K ish, and they are currently around 24K, so a 7K increase will deliver funds for Port.

The club lost money in Round 1 last year when it had 28,300 at the game. Fair to say, a 5-7k increase on our average (putting us in the 29-31k range) would not produce a very good profit at all. Better than the current situation for sure (and Id be happy if we improved crowds by that much) but a 50k profit is completely insignificant compared to what some clubs pull from home games.

Macca, dedja is correct, I'm sure there is a new agreement that guarantees Port a good profit if they draw over 25,000.
