I have been a long time North supporter and a current full financial member of the Club even though I live in the Country and rarely attend matches. When North were in a financial rut and looking at a merger with Sturt, supporters of both clubs intigated actions to get their clubs back on track. I know we had a great sponser in Gerard Industries to help get us through, but the club had still had to make tough decisions with refinancing debts etc and are now reaping the financial rewards. Although still waiting that elusive next premiership.

With Port Adelaide all they need to do is to get supporters of both clubs back to attend matches and open up their wallets to become financial members and not just barrackers. I believe, with what North, Sturt and the other SANFL clubs have done to turn their finances around then both the Magpies and Power can survive. One must remember it's great support a premiership club, but a true supporter will back their club through the lean times as well as the winning times

Finally, Port supporters get out there rally for the Magpies to become a strong club again!

In the lowest socio-economic part of Adelaide, Port supporters are lucky to be able to afford to support one club - how do you figure they are going to be able to support 2? And this, whether by attendances or by playing the pokies, is where the whole problem lies.

I would love to be able to afford to be a member of both clubs, but can't...so I go to either the Power or the Magpies when I can afford to and when they fit in with my other commitments. I am not the only Port supporter in this situation.

It's a no brainer, just buy memberships for the Magpies as the SANFL will prop up the Power anyway.

I'm sure the club would appreciate that, but it leads me back to an argument I've been making about football "supporters" for years. If you are not putting money into the club in some form, or at least generating funds through volunteer labour, you are NOT a supporter. Watching them play on telly and bragging about them in the bar when they win a flag is not supporting the club in any way.

Every club has them ... silent non-participating unfinancial members. They wait until the club they've watched and enjoyed for many years is going under for the third time before it dawns on them to let the butterflies free from the wallet and buy a f**king membership!!!

A message to so-called supporters of EVERY club ... don't leave it until it is too late, purchase a membership now, and be a part of something special. And in the words of the great John Kennedy Sr, you can say to yourself, "At least I did something!!".

Interesting discussions ranging from one extreme to the other.

Please remember, for there to be a competition, you need an opponent.

North was seriously helped to enable it to continue to be an opponent.

So should Port.

I much prefer beating them on the field of battle, there is an immense satisfation in that. Something that will be lost if they are not there.

Firstly, happy 8-0 day to all.

Secondly. Is this the most unpopular proposal ever put forward to the SANFL ??? Any others not receive a single vote of support.

I sincerely hope Port Adelaide can survive and urge all Port fans to get out to the games in droves this year. Never has your SANFL team needed you more.

Still some revenue streams left for Port despite the dire reports. An increase in season ticket, memberships, merchandise sales, sponsorships, game day revenue. Plus the % of the revenue received from Alberton i think its 15%. With the addition of about $350K SANFL dividends again this year. It si not all doom and gloom. Hopefully without any debt Port can build back up from here.

On the subject of Port's AFL team surviving. Well after a discussion i had with a guy from the ATO today. It could be interesting.

Technically 8-1.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Hasn't the Port Magpies Football Club only been around since 1997? Only 13 years of history will be lost if they fold.

Is a rally actually organised for Port by Port supporters? If they've mentioned there is one then I've missed it. They all seem to have given up (Booney excepted).

I heard that it may be Sturt and House Brothers, allegedly they advised that if Sturt voted against the proposal they'd pull their money.
Good on Sturt for standing up to those sort of bully boy tactics if correct.

Well the owner of House Brothers is on the Port Power board. Hmmmmm.......

Oh right o well I can see where they were coming from then.
But why sponsor Sturt, go and sponser the Magpies!

They possibly do, and maybe it is to do with a business decision based on who their clients are.

Also it could be that they wanted a viable competition.

So their pulled Sturt $$ may now go to Alberton. :?

This hasn't happened as far as I know and doubt that it would. If anyone was going to lose a sponsorship it would be the Maggies as they won't have much to play for with no next year for them (if this is the case).

Well....if the commision and the directors dont think the financial plan was sustainable then you have to accept that and move on. As a supporter, I was unsure if I wanted this to go through for a couple of reasons. I agree with the decision that it would put even more burden on the PAFC, which cant happen. I want the PAMFC and its supporters to fight back from this and do everything they can to ensure survival beyond this year. It may be hard but god damn each and everyone of us has to do everything possible to make sure our club remains in the SANFL.

Its hard not to get emotional when thinking that in 7-8 months time I may be watching the last ever game the Magpies play. Very very hard to fathom and take in at the moment.

Macca, the merger was the worst possible result for the Magpies. Trust me on that. The Power is a lame duck, and any financial affiliation with it would have sounded a definitive death-knell in the very near future.

As it stands we remain independent, and answerable to no-one, and will live or die based on the actions of our board, members and the latent supporter base over the next 6-10 months.

Had the merger been approved we would have been on our knees, and there are only two things you can do on you knees and neither of them are particulalrly gratifying.

Better to live on your feet than die on your knees.
