Is merging Ports last option?

Postby Brad » Tue Feb 09, 2010 10:40 pm

Just because the vote went against them do Port just shut up and die?

Surely they have enough supporters to rally around and do something about saving the Magpies, Footscray managed to survive back in 1989, Richmond saved itself in 1991 with 'save our skins'.

I'd say it was their first option.
Now the PAP and PAM need to find their individual ways through this, with individual plans.

No its not the end its only the beginning of salvation for the Maggies, so all you so called supporters stop talking about it put your hands in your pockets and splash out the cash ,surely after a 140 years you must have quite a few wealthy business people even millionaires who love the club and would do anything for the club, personally the merger was not the way to go after reading the Powers financial problems it would of been another yoke around the neck of the Maggies, i think they should stay clear of the Power as they will drag you down, i know you true Maggy supporters were knifed in the back in 1996 so all you loyal Maggy people rally up and start the the fight to survive you can do it as other clubs have done it the past so go for it full steam ahead.

Shame they've given up. In 1995 when it was almost over for Sturt, my girlfriend at the time worked for one of the clubs financiers and she had a go at me for donating a fair bit of cash to help keep Sturt going. She said it was a waste of money as they were moving in the following week and shutting the club down.

2010, we're still here.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Could the SANFL take over the running of the Port Magpies? The AFL imposed themselves on Carlton and sat on their board till they got their house in order and proved that we were worthy of the AFL's support. Can the SANFL do the same thing?

Obviously you're a man of astute decision making Barto. As Sturt has done extremely well since, I'm guessing it wasn't the same with the lass.

I am hating the defeated stance that most magpie fans are taking. This is not over we now need to fight on and now we can do so with out having to answer to the Power.

I now look at all the time that has been wasted on this merger and think what else the club could have been doing.

I appluad your positivity. But what's your plan?

The Magpies need to come up with basically $1m minimum almost immediately. So if the club could get together 40,000 supporters, that's $25 each.

Then approximately $300k is required per season to continue. This is where the problem lies IMO. Without a significant pokie room, it's just not going to happen.

Any ideas on generating that sort of turnover season in/season out?

You would think there would be some decent $$ and well off people on the West Coast, I wonder if they could garner a consortium from their country zone to fund the club and strengthen even further the ties in those communites?

Could we one day see the West Coast Magpies?

Based on devilsadvocate's post - 40,000 supporters, $25 each to save the club now and $8 each to run for next season, is not all that expensive if they care, and if there are that many supporters...

I have no doubt there are at least that many.

IMHO - the $25 now is the easy bit. The stumbling block would be getting a committment from the 40,000 to come up with their $8 on top of going to the footy, membership and life's other costs year in, year out. So without a plan for ongoing income outside of just what the clubs fans can contribute, the initial $1m plan is flawed too.

Merge with who though? Maybe the Woodville-West Torrens-Port Magpies/Eagles/Warriors. (WWTPMEW)
