Leaping Lindner, another question about Adelaide bands, did you ever see "The Screaming Believers"?
Great Adelaide band. Last saw them at the Union Hotel, when all the bands that had played there over the years, put on a brilliant gig when owner "Shirley" was retiring. It was a memorable night; the "Screaming Believers" were a great.
Did you ever see Nick Cave....in "The Birthday Party" gigs at the Guv and Tivoli?

CN I use to "live" at the Union on Saturday Nights in the early 80's. Saw the Screaming Believers on many occassions as well as the Urban Guerillas, The Dagoes and Kaos  amongst others. I was there the night they recorded the EP "live at the Union Hotel" (which I still have as well as their two LPS). Every now and then M16, Don't talk of Love and Sandra still get a spin on the Lindner Turntable. I probably last saw them on Grand Prix weekend in 92(?) there was a big gig at the Tivoli with them The Iron Shieks, Raison Toast, The Exploding White Mice and The Clowns of Decadence. Still a great band then.
I never saw The Birthday Party and have regretted it ever since. They once played a gig in Adelaide with The Scientists doing the support. That would have to be the double bill of the century! Funnily enough I'm now good mates with their guitarist and he tells some wild stories about that band.
Shirley's farewell night sounds great. When was it? And do you remember any of the other bands on the bill? I hope Kaos didn't play that would have cleared the room :P

I remember going to the Tivoli to see Raison Toast's last show. Also on the bill were Clowns Of Decadence & Splatterheads. COD were on 1st, the RT. However, after dragging out their farewell show, every punter in the building bar 4-5 (myself, Stud, Deb Stud, poss Harry & Simon Butcher) left, leaving the Splatterheads play to a crowd of 4-5!

Leaping Lindner, did some digging around to get some info on those gigs.
Was a "Unioniser" myself, probably stood next to each other at the bar drinking Coopers, or maybe you were one of our/my eightball "victims"? :)

The farewell to Shirley was also in my opinion, the end of the Union as we know it. After 4 decades, Shirley was retiring and members of alot of the bands who had played there did a farewell show. Can't remember all those who played on (24/1/2003), but the Screaming Believers, the legendary Don Morrison were great. The Union had seen the likes of JBE, Symphany Orchestra, The Sputniks, Mad Turks, The Units, Exploding White Mice, Garden Path and The Checkers to name but a few.

"The Birthday Party" played the Tivoli on 23,24,25 of Jan 1981 and the Governor Hindmarsh on 24 of Jan 1982. During my search I came across the song list for the Guv gig.
1. King Ink
2. Pleasure Heads
3. Zoo music girl
4. Six inch gold blade
5. The dim locator
6. Junkyard
7. A dead song
8. She's hit
9. Dead Joe
10. Release the bats
11. Nick the Stripper

Remember, as Nick Cave sang while in the Birthday Party: "King Ink.....he's much bigger than you think"
Great days.

My eight ball skills usually depended on how many $1 cans of West End I had sunk over the evening
I was in Adelaide for xmas and caught up with an old mate from those days who went to the farewell gig. He said he only stayed for a bit of The Believers though.
I also showed my wife where The Union is. It's all very "nice" around there these days
