The Bye????

Postby CUTTERMAN » Mon Feb 01, 2010 7:33 am

With the talk of both Ports merging or Magpies folding the Bye is being brought up again as an issue, I'm wondering once and for all what everyone thinks about it.

I've voted for it, I think it gives supporters and players time during the season to catch up with family and friends and a bit of time for injuries to heal.

Same reasons I like the bye.

If we did go to an 8 team comp I wonder if a split round would be a permanent fixture to allow some sort of mid-season break?
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

I like having that week off but I've gone with crap because of the uneven way the draw is structured.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I wanna see my team every week, so I voted against it.
Admittedly, you can use that week to go and spy on the opposition.
With any luck it will be 'the game of the round' between teams on top of the ladder.
If not..... i-) *boring*

I don't like the bye.

I just had a great (or very stupid) idea on how to get rid of it.
The team that has the bye plays the WAFL side that has the bye on the same round.
The result of the match gets recorded on our premiership table, but the name of the WAFL side gets recorded only as "WAFL".
So for example, if Central plays Swan Districts in round one and the Dogs win 95-90 then the premiership table would read:
Central 1-0 95-90
WAFL 0-1 90-95

Likewise the result would get recorded on the WAFL premiership ladder

SANFL 1-0 95-90
Swan Districts 0-1 90-95

Then in the following week Norwood gets belted by Claremont 150-50, the result would again be tallied under SANFL and WAFL in the respective leagues. Hence after two rounds, on the SANFL ladder:
WAFL 1-1 240-145

And on the WAFL ladder:
SANFL 1-1 145-240

And so the seaon continues with the teams playing the bye acting as representatives for their respective leagues until we enter the finals. Which would become a "final 5" for both leagues.
If the SANFL or WAFL bye team makes the finals in the others' opposing league then the 6th ranked side from the represented league would play in the other's finals series. So let's say Westies finish 6th in the SANFL, but the SANFL makes the 5 on the WAFL ladder, then Westies would play the WAFL finals from 5th place. And same for the WAFL if they have the same situation in the SANFL.

Brilliant or stupid :?:

Always hated it -can kill any momentum a team might have and is too disruptive to team performance.
Sure players and fans can have a break, but everyone did just fine for decades in the eras of even team numbers.

Hate it and IMHO it can shape an entire season of some clubs and even worse when a state game break or split round is thrown into the mix.
Footy every week like the good old days, allows the season to gain more momentum.
