An interesting weekend of results.

Mitcham have improved enormously and were every chance of winning against the taints.

Sorry Nev but i am officially writing Flinders chances off. At full strength a dangerous team capable of beating anyone but you guys havent managed to get a complete squad together since pre Farnan cup semis. A shame as the stronger the comp the better.

A bit of a surprise that the Goats getting up so easily. I suppose some people may have taken advantage of a 4 day weekend and that could have impacted on Na Fianna's side.

At this stage it looks like W.I, Onkas and St B will all qualify for finals. Na Fianna and Flinders to battle it out for 4th but as i said Flinders havent got a full squad in some time and Na Fianna are a well drilled unit. I think they will win that important match and complete the 4.

Also to President Zaluski, Stephen and the other bloke whos name escapes me. They are all making their state league debuts in the coming weeks which is good for our comp. If you throw in the old firm of Anto, Adrian and the Whistling Yoda as well as the fully qualified Gav, Matty,Micky Lawlor and other former ref,s still involved with the association ; Kenny,Stormin Norman and Clayton "Ill never ref again" Lush I think we now well and truly have the mens ref situation sorted.

So where were they on Friday and Sunday????
5 of them (old school) were in the Na Fianna team and the 6th NAF Ref (TJ) was away.
Julie Smith stepped up to the plate without notice to ref her first ever Men's game. Pretty good effort Jules, considering Men's football is faster, more physical and with a hell of lot of on field banter that doesn't exist in Women's football.

We're in hell right now gentlemen. Believe me. And we can stay here, get the shit kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one inch at a time.

Yes O'Neills only. Good point on the ref's as T.Javor had to ref a game on Friday he was not down to do also. In fact finding anyone remotely connected with the committee to help with these types of decisions was impossible. The big Z was there but he was on the field at the time.

Yes, thats correct. It meant that i arrived in Mt Gambier at 3 am for my 6 am commitments on Sat morning. As for NO ref on Sunday. Thats inexcusable. After fridays schmoz surely with soooo many trained refs this problem would have been rectified.

Im not rostered to do it....
Brian is a name from 91-93 who left a small bar tab debt for the association upon his departure. He was a heavy set fellow (very fat) who played in goals for the young Wolfhounds as part of their new revolution program. Each time we gained a penalty the big man would make the journey down to take the penalty. If he missed he would buy the boys a carton and put it on his tab...Those penalties were exciting for all involved :D . In hindsight, he is not likely to be the ref on sunday. I dont know who they have rostered to do it. I have only seen one new ref so im guessing its one of the new fellas.

Only thing I'd be fishing for would be a Men's Referee - more elusive than the Threatened Species of National Significance, the Murray Cod.
In fact I'm a big fan of the Women's Gaelic Football and our Women Ref's. They do take it seriously and have great dedication. It is a big step up to blowing the whistle in a Men's game - I've ref'd a lot of both and they are very different games. Jules did a great job and so too Chook who ref'd her first Men's game earlier this summer in the Jim Farnan comp.

PS: forgot about the 7th NAF Ref just back from Ireland - BJ

LMFAO - Thanks Wristy.

Now there's an illustrious list - people who left the Association with an unpaid debt!!! Best to leave that one alone for obvious reasons - would be a good laugh over a couple of beers though.

Welcome back to the forum (or had you ever left?) Knew you wouldn't be able to resist the ref discussion.

Another thought for an All-Star team over the history of Gaelic in SA: the College/HS teams - players from the various schools that most young Gaelic Footballers came from, including: Sacred Heart, Salesians, St Pauls, St Mick's and probably a couple of others. (My alma mater would win ;) )

My Heinz sauces tell me that the 7 a side match last night between W.I & Onkas was somewhat of a spiteful affair...? Anyone care to elaborate. Think they are yet to face off in the Hannigan cup so that could be a game to highlight on the schedule..!!

I believe a particular poster on this forum (who has coached a minors side to the championship) has described his possible chances of coaching as "gaining momentum". We must ensure that we get a side over to NZ to right last years wrongs.

It's a pity that the previous coach left MG, I hear he was beaten so badly at FIFA that he couldn't stand the embarresment

While I am on questions, has anyone seen a roster for the referees? It is not on the web or at the ground. With two no-shows alone last week, it is a big problem for the association. It needs to be fixed fast. We don't want ref's who are tired, inexperienced or just plain inappropriate refereeing games leading up to finals.

It's times like these that the slack arse clubs who don't provide refs are really noticable.

On that point, I wonder if W.Ireland are now going to claim they have provided a ref for men's games this season (Jules last week). Wouldn't it be ironic if they did use that point? The irony? Jules showed more balls last week in refereeing than all those "Mountain Goats" who won't do it.

No flame wars now.

My tips for this week: (goin for a couple of roughies)
BDO to affect all games as did Aust Day extra long w/e last week.

NAF v ONK: NAF 2 pts - NAF to have more players this week (??) and Onkas to have a few at BDO. Coach Lawlor to chock up defence and force a shootout. Will only work if NAF forwards have confidence to hang onto the ball and take a score most of the time.

IA v MIT: Could be a good game. Should be a bit of angst between these two. MIT should win on paper - but game is not played on paper. IA will try to use Gaelic skills to carry ball forward and take some shots from in front and not out near the sidelines; and IA defence need to slow MIT run and force them to kick from distance or from out wide. IA to upset in a close one. IA by 1-3

WI v FON: Be nice to see FON with a full team and turn this into match of the round - not likely though. WI by 10.

Big winners: Taints with the bye - BDO, hot weather, booze. Beautiful break from 1st game Fri last week til next game next week. Nice timing guys. Will have been in a good paddock for a couple of weeks when they front up against WI on Fri 5 Feb.
