Nup, no idea AB - it would be a fair bet, but the logistics of all the membership categories would be a nightmare, I reckon. Probably the biggest stumbling block in the whole process.

I think that's well known that neither party were that happy, the verbal agreement was made a good month or so before the announcement though so they had time to pull out before they signed something and it went to the media.

I don't think anyone can say either way for sure if it's going to happen or not. Both sides need it to happen as neither can stand alone long term and have the best facilities. If the rumours going around in the last week are true about the SACA then I think it's possible the SANFL are going to walk in all over them and have it virtually all their own way.

Foley says that a new stadium is unaffordable but the Liberals idea starts getting traction with the people  Labor Government begins damage control

During this time, we SACA members are told that SACA have little hope of getting funds from the SA Govt for the upgrade of Adelaide Oval

In June 2008 Rann and Foley give a Press Conference at AAMI Stadium saying that they would contribute $100m towards its upgrade

State treasurer Kevin Foley said it was the view of the SANFL, the AFL and both the AFL clubs that "a redevelopment of AAMI Stadium is the best result for football in South Australia".

In December 2008, Foley announces that they will have to delay, then withdraw the AAMI investment due to a massive reduction in revenue due to the the global financial crisis.

Liberals resubmit an updated plan for Adelaide including the stadium

Suddenly, this week:

1. The GFC is over and we can now afford the money....but better still, it has passed so quickly we now have $450m to give them  Not a bad turn around in 12 months. I sincerely hope WorkCover announce a similar spectacular result. I also expect a huge surplus in the budget......and flying pigs
2. AAMI is suddenly NOT the best choice anymore. WTF Kev - did you lie to us?
3. They now love the SACA
4. We have a new stadium in the city thanks to Mike and Kevin

Are the cracks in this silly scheme starting to emerge!!!
Leave the Adelaide Oval as is and develop a Stadium with a roof somewhere.
What about the Clipsal site? Government owned and aching for redevelopment. Perfect position, soon to have tram access, train stations at Bowden and North Adelaide. Oodles of parking around in Bonython Park and adjacent facilities and major road access from every direction. Someone please think outside the 'square'

You'll have people claiming the Bowden site is too far still (people claim Hindmarsh Stadium is out in the sticks), a ground at Bowden would be SCG size (playing surface wise) at best, and Bowden is already earmarked for a housing development.

Why do we need a stadium with a roof? Melbourne has one and the playing surface is terrible - it still needs to be about the sport (it's not entirely about spectator comfort) in some part at least.

I agree. It's not like we have a European etc winter climate. Some people need a serious case of HTFU.

After all if the major Soccer leagues in Europe and most of the NFL teams in the USA can play outdoors then I'm sure the Crows and Power are more than capable.....

I agree too, the football going public has become soft enough these days, lets not make it any easier for them to continue that way

The most intelligent comment of the decade. Footy is an outside sport and so far nobody has developed a decent grass playing surface in a stadium with a roof. What a complete waste of money it would be (Has anyone heard about Water) . If you want a stadium with airconditioning and a roof its called your Lounge Room

Me 3

I see no need for a roof on a footy stadium in Adelaide at all.

So given all that regarding a stadium with a roof, the reason that $450m is being contemplated to give us a stadium that already exists at West Lakes is?

As a Crows supporter TBH I'd be happy for the status quo to continue and I think the club privately would feel the same. All this talk of antiquated stadium and roofs yet we sell out or close to sell out most of our home games at AAMI already.

There's bigger forces at play however obviously and a lot of govt money on the table.

For those that think a roof is the be all and end all of a stadium, does that make the MCG an antiquated stadium?

Of course not. Currently, Adelaide needs to redevelop a stadium. At the moment, Adelaide Oval is the preferred site. The plans look great (and the northen end can be done at a later stage ala the Gabba and the Brisbane Lions administration building - which was removed 3-4 years after the major rebuilding of the ground). Adelaide Oval, if managed correctly, can be the great multi-purpose city stadium people crave for.

At the end of the day, you won't be able to satisfy everyone though - look at the tramline extension (everyone wanted it in the '90's, then when the extension got done everyone complained about it).
