BIG Bash Grand Final SA V VIC

Postby mal » Tue Jan 19, 2010 10:48 pm

What a game
We creamed em last time at Adelaide Oval, but the Vics are baaaack in form
Brad Hodge has lifted them
THE DAVE is till got it and must be dismissed

Be a very close game, but the Vics are likely to be a slight favourite for mine

AFRIDI not playing
Which means BORGAS in
Bit late now but I would also have played KLINGER and dropped COSGROVE who bats too slowly at this format
The minature golfer will retain his spot as well
WEEKES is another who might have been ok if selected
GEORGE for some reason is overlooked for the short games, although it prob is a good thing so he can concentarte on SS cricket

Batting order
COOPER
HARRIS
COSGROVE
BORGAS
POLLARD
CHRISTAIN
MANOU
OBRIEN
CLEARY
TAIT
PUTLAND

STRATERGY
Make sure THE DAVE has TAIT bowling at him ASAP
Dont bowl spin at THE DAVE when he is set
Bowl lots of slower balls at this mob as they like the ball coming on
Dont open with MANOU as NANNES will trouble him

Go the redbacks
Lets do it for ROD/REB and HAWK...

No fishing at all
Ive been backing SA to win most games, when you have $$$ on games some things stand out
Mark Cosgrove is struggling to hit the ball at the moment
He uses up too many balls n his innings his strike rates since the Perth game have been sluggish
He also puts pressure on the other batters to score quicker
Added to this he is slow between the wickets and its costing us a few runs as well
I just dont think he is suited to this format as most would think
Having said that I hope he can score a brilliant 50 in 20 balls in the final and shut me up

Mark however is a brilliant 50 over player and a good SS player

The other player I would blood into the team next year would be James Smith
He hits hard and might be suited opening with the field up

HOOKESY
Skipper Graham Manou is saying lets do it for Hooksey and win the final this week
Agree would be great to do it for the great man
Lets also do it for the 3 guys in my opening post

Cosgrove
WA 42(29)
QLD 43*(40)
VIC 15(14)
TAS 25(30) All out for 131
NSW 7(11)

I think you are being a little harsh mal, I think Cosi has been our barometer with the bat, come to think of it, I think you do too being a former North Pines player ;)

LM
Strike Rates are the 20/20 criteria
averages are not necessasrily the main thing

20/20 BIG BASH CAREER

2005/2006
12[11]
15[18]
27 runs off 29 balls
s/r 93

2006/2007
0[1]
50*[42]
10 [12]
6[18]
66 runs off73 balls
s/r 90

2007/2008
16[13]
0[1]
6[7]
22 runs of21 balls
s/r 104

2008/2009
did not play

2009/2010
42[29]
43[40]
15[14]
25[29]
7[11]
132 runs off 123 balls
s/r 107

TOTAL
247 runs
246 balls
s/r 100.4

He simply is not well suited to this format ?
How can he be touted a future International 20/20 player is confusing me
He has in several years never taken an attack apart in an innings

Cossie is a brilliant 50 over player and may still represent his country again
But he will never play for AU in 20/20 cricket on his efforts so far

You still need a good balance, if you have a top order batsman striking around 100 and hanging around you can still build a decent total around him.
I do agree that he shouldn't be touted as a T20 shoe-in for the national side and he is a handy 50 over player.

I can put aside your thoughts on Cosgrove, even if I disagree with them. But surely bringing Max into the T20 team is a joke? He's the close to the slowest batsman in the squad and not a T20 player.

2005/2006
22[14] grand final win

2006/2007

20[19]

2007/2008
10[11]

That was his career for Victoria
Interesting to note he never opened the batting
most of his batting was at number 5
107 runs off 82 balls
s/r 130

2008/2009
5[7]
9[9]
24[19]

8[12]

SA career as an opener

88 runs off 79 balls
s/r 111

overall
195 runs off 161 balls
s/r 120

Smac if Maxie is too slow
What does it make Cossie who strikes at 100 compared to Maxies 120 ?

The only thing that the Redbacks heirachy can do to give them the best chance of winning on Saturday night is to force Manou to drop down the order.

Striek rate dont mean jack if you cant score more than 10 which Maxi didnt last season.... cozzy this season has made what, 2 x 40's and 1 x 25 and not forgetting he batted around the bigger hitting Pollard etc and was pivotal in us posting large scores.....

I think you point has holes in it MAL and the stats show it as you cant use stats from 3 years ago to justify his place in the team currently

Strike rate is very very important, even more important than averages in 20/20
Most games average out at 160 runs less extras about 150 runs of the bat
So the top 5-6 batters should average about 25 with the bat

In theory if they all bat at 100 strike rate the team will score 120 + 10 sundries = 130 runs
130 runs will win you about 2 games in 10
Cossie strikes at 100
His slow scoring can also put extra pressure on the other batsman

Footy Smart
Klinger in the middle order strikes a lot quicker than Cosgrove

Also MOST batsman would EASILY score 40 of 40 balls at this format
But MOST batsman try to score 40 runs of 20-25 balls and get out
IF they all batted like COSSIE the team would finish close to bottom

As I said Cossies innings of 43 off 40 v QL was the right dig for that situation chasing a sMALlish target
But some of his other digs were far too slow in the context of those games

Average response Smac
What would you like
HARRIS 40[40]
MANOU 40[40]
COSGROVE 20* [20]
COOPER 20*[20]
Sundries 10
SA 2/130

Its better than
100 of 70 balls all out
and 8 sundries
SA 108

BUT
It only takes 1 batter to make 40 off 25 to beat the 2/130 anytime

Yes, and the likelihood of that being Max is almost non-existant. Choc, Pollard, Cooper are all capable of providing the big, quick innings. A linchpin to stick around for a while is pretty important as well. If that linchpin were Klinger and he managed to tip over 40 it would come at a strike rate of 130, it would be at a strike rate of 80. He isn't capable of scoring that quickly for a long time, longer forms of the game are his forte.
