Help Ive lost my globe

Postby Lunchcutter » Fri Jan 15, 2010 7:07 pm

Hey silly question I know but when I started up my laptop this evening all the icons on the status bar appeared as per normal (charger one, time, kapersky, java, yadda, yadda, yadda but no computer with the globe. This has never happened to me before and i was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience. I launched chrome and am online with no probs but its weird not having that icon there showing me i have access to the internet. any replies would be appreciated.

I don't know how familiar with the settings, so forgive me if I mention things you already know..

If you are using XP this is not unusual behaviour as there have been ongoing problems with the status bar display.
Things do come and go, but sometimes unlocking the task bar and expanding its width to about double the default setting helps.
Remember to then relock it though so you don't accidentally drag it around the screen or even drag it off screen.
Selecting "Auto-hide the task bar" then takes the wider task bar off screen until you put your mouse pointer down near the bottom of the screen.
[I assume you don't have "Hide Inactive Icons" selected in the task bar? That would make the small icons come and go.]

If you right click on the task bar, then click on "Properties", you can look at the options available.
You can change them and see the difference then change them back with the same method.

Thank you Psyber :D ill investigate further now - edit yay it's all fixed. The network box in properties was unchecked. problem solvered by checking. Now all good - no idea why it disappeared like that - could be something to do with the fact i am slack with installing windows updates.. (they always make me paranoid, a couple of times after installing updates the pc has really stuffed up and has had to go to the shop)

I've had a couple of problems with Windows Updates too.
These days I uncheck Automatic Updates in favour of Notify only. Then I decide which ones to download and install.
