why not try a soft plastic ?

I would recommend purchasing a bait pump and pumping some clickers for bait. Are a very effective bait and are readily available and more importantly live.

To me switching from bait to artificial fishing .Is something that you need to do full on .don't take bait and just fish lures .and then you must put in the hours .
IMHO anyway

Fished Mount Camel beach 2 nights last week using halco and all rounder metal lures. Caught 20 salmon each night before opting to catch and release dozens of fish after that. All were around the 1.5-3kg mark. Awesome gutter running approx 10 metres off shore for about 100 metres. Some of the best Salmon fishing I have ever encountered

Salmon weren't huge but the numbers made up for it. Im thinking there would be bigger specimens during the colder months

Well driving to the lake this morning .I was trying to work out the wind direction.Ended up heading to one of my favourite spots.
Waded out to calf deep water and thinking the wind was at my back I cast my surface popping fly .In truth the wind was blowing very strongly over my left shoulder and forcing my fly very close to shore.
Any way compensating for this while not easy could be done. And I was on my way .
Sixth cast in and I wish I had brought some bread crumbs .This little bream was just hooked through the lip .Rather embarrassed at this fish but meh
Image
I took its picture on the lid of the container I use to store my digital camera just an idea of size.
And I took this extra shot to try and show the popper fly !!
Image

So while this didn't inspire me with greatness I continued on.Once I got to the end of this beach the wind was so bad I headed to the next beach.Well rocks to be exact. While
I was still getting fish finger sized fish to jump not in the numbers of the first beach but still it gave me hope.At this point it was hard to see my fly on the water surface .And the wind was a pushing the fly .Plus I was slipping tripping over rocks etc.
When I actually saw a small school of bait fish swim through and I thought .Lets keep the fly moving for awhile.
BANG or BAM
Bait fish sailed through the AIR !!! my line gave a nice tug .I started stripping line in and thought bit of weight there not fish finger sized fish!! So I let the Fish (didn't know what it was at that stage) run and started reeling the line in.She looked a nice Bream in the water and she went for three runs all up .and I landed her among some rocks.
Image
I took a few pictures this was the best one or in other words the only one that worked.
She measured 25 cms to the fork and was a fat little fish .
And that was it nothing else troubled me but I was stoked a PB on the Surface (not my biggest Bream on a fly )
Great way to spend a windy morning in Adelaide !!!
Yes I know a sane fly guy would have been home in bed ;)

Postby Mickyj » Mon Jan 18, 2010 12:15 pm

Well it is my BIRTHDAY today. And I organised to have today off as leave.I did neglect to tell anyone in my family Wife almost had a heart attack when I was till home at 6.20 this morning.
Anyway slipped down to the same two beaches as Saturday morning.I missed Sunday even this nut-case SWFF thought the wind was to strong !!!.
So today with a smaller choppy surface I thought it would be good as well.
Half way along the first beach I managed to drop a tiddler, not much was showing any interest in surface feeding. Then casting out halfway between the deeper water and shallower weed beds.I started getting some more interest.Of course at this stage I went into brain dead mode and totally forgot what I had intended to do if a larger fish actually struck.Result three dropped Bream around the 20cm mark!!
So hitting myself in the back of the head mentally.I decided if I was lucky enough to hook another fish I would play it the same as I did Saturday .
Now a few minutes latter and further along this beach .Two things happened a reasonable size Bream jumped out the water an arms length from me.It wasn't the jumping that got me jumping it was the sound .It was almost like the crack from a gunshot .it was that loud .
Anyway just after that BANG!!!
I'm on again this time I made sure the hook was set .I let the fish take out the slack of my stripped line .walked backwards and played this little20cm Bream to the shore.
Nice on a surface popper
Image
A minute or so latter a little further up this beach
BANG!!!
I'm on again .Once again I did the same I let the fish take the line walk backwards .But this little bugger stopped dead .I thought it was off then it went again .But I played it into the shore .
Nice 23cm Bream on a surface popper fly!!
Image
This one you can see the popper fly better
Image

After that I made my way to the next beach but nothing. The wind was getting colder so I headed home .
Great way to spend my birthday morning !!

Well another Saturday and another strong wind from the south or south west.Anyway I head down to one of my favourite beaches at West Lakes .Parked the car and headed to the start of the beach.
And first cast POP a tiny bream was jumping at my fly. This happened a couple of times and then nothing .So by this time I had waded back to my car.And I thought a quick change of fly ,as the one I was using had never produced a fish .
So on with another popper and I'm off.The wind wasn't the hassle I had thought. It created water movement .The biggest hassle was the ARMADA OF SKULL BOATS that were training on the lake today.
About an hour in and a good length of beach waded .I had a hit and miss then BAM
Image
and a bad shot of the fly
Image

A quick couple of snaps and he back in the water went this little 19cm Bream and I would say a minute after I was back in the water Bam again

Image

I continued on my way after this did have a giant jump that missed the fly .And a couple more small fish that didnt take the fly properly but by 8.45 am the fish had all gone home.
And by the time I left at 9.20am I spent about 2 1/2 hours chasing them
Cheers

I'm not certain what happened in 2009 Jas.I think the weather or something no bait fish in the lake no Salmon coming in Stuff like that .
I even had to pass on a trout trip tomorrow a bit late in the day for me at present.
Never fear I'll be trying another spot tomorrow AM.

PS
I almost put Mondays fish picture up .It was the background that gave it away to me that and the fact the flies are slightly different .
