1984 Escort Cup Final

Postby Mr66 » Wed Jan 06, 2010 6:38 pm

Hi Spelly, I have a descrepancy with South's score from this game.
12.19.91 or 12.9.81
I'm pretty sure it's 91 but need confirmation.
Thanks.

Do you have the premiership table for 84 spelly? Obviously Norwood were premiers :( with Port runners up. I'm interested in where both South and Sturt finished given their pre season form (in particular the Double Blues given that they were grand finalists the previous year), i seem to recall Port beating Sturt fairly easily in one game i listened to in 84 (i was living over the Eyre Peninsula and didn't have commercial tv so was a fair way away from SANFL exposure that year).

IIIRC the final premiership ladder was:

Norwood
Port
Bays - thanks Laurie Argent ;)
Centrals
South
Not sure 6-9
Woodville last

Actual placings are here:

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

GWW, I'm not sure the Escort cup was a pre-season comp in 1984?

Up to some year in the 80s it was a night series during the season with varying levels of commitment to it by the clubs as I recall.

The semi finals and final were played during the season, Rounds 1-4 were preseason.

The final was played between Rounds 17 and 18; in fact, three days after the final, South beat Sturt again, in Round 18.

Were South really the kings of night football or were they one of the few clubs who took the night competition seriously?

South had a famous "mosquito fleet" band of runners who were suited to night footy - players such as Mark Naley, Graham Robbins, Ron Hateley, Shane Butler and Wayne Slattery. They certainly were the champs of the genre.

Actually I have been meaning to start a thread on here discussing South circa 1979-1984 and whether they were under-achievers because, on their day, they could be brilliant but seemed to fall over at finals time (except for 79).
