Port and West merge

Postby wobat head » Tue Jan 05, 2010 4:44 pm

As someone who has followed the SANFL closely over the last 20 years and is a Magpies supporter the most logical answer is for Port and West to merge
I know that people will disagree but I would rather see Port Magpies merge and win some games then be in their present situation
Lets face it West and Port are sister clubs, West have a great facility at Richmond and could use an increase in membership
It would mean that Port Power can worry about what they need to worry about AFL and the SANFL would be reduced to 8 teams which would be a great result
I know that many will disagree with my opinion but personally I believe it is the most obvious, sensible and logically decision
The great thing about football is that individuals are passionate about it and consequently people will disagree for various reasons but lets face it The Port can not keep two teams afloat, I drove the Port the other day and its like a one horse town and the horse is as sick as a dog, there is not near enough money around the place to support both
Time to make tough decisions if this merge does not happen Port Magpies supporters will have to get use to competing with South for the wooden spoon and the Power will just have another distraction they do not need

GO THE WESTERN MAGPIES – they would be an instant Premiership chance and create a club that would be able to challenge Centrals as lets face it since the Magpies have suffered because of the Power all the other clubs have not had the strength, character or toughness and I could use a lot of other adjectives but would prefer not to use on this forum to stand up to Centrals, without the Magpies Centrals have had it to easy in this comp and such a merge has to happen as all other teams are soft

Why drag West Adelaide into this problem?

We don't need a dilution of supporter bases right now IMO, especially the PAM people who would surely wash their hands of the SANFL before they'd support the Western Magpies.

An amazing post for a Port supporter.

Is there a push for this starting somewhere else? Trying to generate a bit of interest, see what the feeling is among Joe Public?

If Port can't survive on their own then they can piss off and die. Don't need another team of Hybrids.

Leave Westies alone. If Port got involved they'd **** up their BBQ.

I suggested somewhat light-heartedly in other threads either a "Westport" solution or a merger with WWT to resurrect the Port Natives.
I can't see either of those clubs wanting to merge with the Magpies, though, without a desperate need on their part that we don't know about, or a substantial "sweetener" from the SANFL...

a merger is a good idea- allows the Williams family to attend any reunions that take place, without getting confused as to where they should go... ;)

i can't believe what i just read but these two clips of you post i have to reply to

1, yes you would rather see a merged team being more successful than being near the bottom etc etc, but i very much doubt if many port people feel the same way & surely it is just ports turn in the cycle to be in the bottom half of the table & instead of saying ''we're basically bottom & broke so lets merge'' why don't YOU DO THE HARD WORK & WORK YOUR WAY OUT OF IT AS CLUBS LIKE NORTH & STURT HAVE HAD TO DO FOR SURVIVAL

2, all other teams are soft  but not as soft as you just giving up after 1 bad year & it is 1 bad year because the year before you played finals & the giving up (where is that creed ??) is bloody well softer than any team you care too mention

i texted my west mate terry he replied ''they can merge if they called the team west adelaide (port using the adelaide part of their name), wear black & red, play home at richmond & are called the bloods''

i think this poster is a troll
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Your post has some merits
But the past has brought up merger talks b4
Usually when clubs are near the bottom, and usually when they are financially strugglng
Was not that long ago ST were in strife with meger talk and when collecting a few spoons

I think its a cycle thing and that PA will come good again
At least PA have not completly disgraced themselves in recent years but are struggling

Someone or something will bail the club out
The real 1870 team will rise again

If you take the names of the teams out it does bring up some good points, if you discuss the teams then emotion's always going to come into it which makes it a difficult thing to discuss.
It'd be good to get a merger similar to the Wests Tigers in the NRL happening if you could bring successful elements from two different entities together.
For eg. one club with good resources, poor crowds, OK onfield performance, mediocre history and another with poor resources, great crowds and great history, or two middle of the road teams into a super club.
Might not be ideal candidates in the SANFL though.

Great, as if there aren't enough threads out there across a multitude of forums giving folks enough opportunity to bash the Magpies?

Not the best example Wedgie, THE reason why I stopped following 'League as a Balmain supporter. Not the most fiancial club too despite the merger
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Brilliant.

I doubt Westies want to take in some starving refugees anyway.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

It won't happen, but the idea has merit. Westies would have the upper hand and would gain much because the Maggies are fightling for their survival. It would kill the Magpies/Power merger, and also give the SANFL an eight team comp without completely losing all the history of the most dominant club in SANFL history.

The way things look the other SANFL clubs and Adelaide won't allow a Port merger to also run a team in the SANFL for fear of possible on and off-field advantages they may gain. So the only other alternative is to just let them die completely, which even though I've hated the wharfies would be a disgrace.

Westies aren't going badly enough to consider it, but maybe should look at the pros and cons and look to the future 10 to 50 years down the track, not just the angst of the supporters today.

I can understand supporters hating the idea as I'd be the same with the Doggies. And look at the c&@p the Eagles supporters still get 20 years on.

But as I said, it won't happen.

I'm now going to pull my head in and go hide in the next room
