Footy crowds acknowledge the opposition...just not quite in the same way

Can't say I've ever really seen golf as a game with "opposition" as such. Seems weird I know, I guess it's because there is no "direct" opponent.

I think a lot of supporters would respect the enemy enough to acknowledge an opposition player who reaches a career milestone or an undisputed talent who is taken off injured or even someone who has had an exceptional game...I know it happens in rugby union.

Can't think of one where every player who leaves the field is applauded by everyone in the way it happens in cricket though.

I have noticed that this happens in the NTFL, often when aboriginal players in particular kick a goal they get congratulated by other aboriginal members of the opposing side, fantastic sportsmanship IMO!

Well of course in tennis there is a direct opponent, it's not rocket science ;) but just between you and me Mags I'd rather eat glass than watch golf (-|

You imagine it would have been common in the gentler days of tennis before professionalism/commercialisation/Americanisation took over.

I'd watch golf any day of the week, FC. Maybe you need a day out at a course watching a tournament to appreciate its finery. ;) Great way to spend a day, watching it. Good way to ruin a walk, playing it - although it doesn't stop me still :)

On the original topic, certainly not much applause at AAMI Stadium when the opposition does something great like a big mark or a freak goal. Mark Merenda kicked one of the best goals I've ever seen, when playing for West Coast, from the north west pocket, and I applauded it. The number of looks I got from surrounding fans.....

C'mon FC, where's your better sense of judgement. Golf is one of the only games where you play against yourself, not with yourself!!!!! ;)

Aussie Rules is the only sport I can think of when you cheer when your opponent scores (ie misses an easy set shot for a behind instread of a goal.)

as for tennis & golf that is predominately an individual sport, however i'll concede that in davis cup & the like they do applaud their opponents with respect
