How can you tell what speed your connection is?

Reread your original post and explain to me why you so desperately need to ditch Telstra in light of the information you have received in this thread.

Because telstra are way way way way way way x 409532994325 expensive compared to other providers.

He is still getting ripped off by Tel$tra on that ADSL1 service as has been highlighted on more than on occasion.

And so is anyone else on BigPond by the way ... no matter what plan they may have.

ADSL2+ is cheaper than ADSL because to deliver ADSL the ISPs have to pay Telstra for access.
Where they have their own DSLAN they can provide a better service cheaper.
I moved from iiNet because they increased the price of basic ADSL to much higher than their ADSL2+ plans, based on this.
Internode did not increase as much and became better value for money.
Now in Adelaide I am paying less for an ADSL2+ service than I paid for ADSL in Melbourne.

To summarise, I was a bit niave and thought we had ADSL2 for the past 2 years via Telstra, I rang up a few other ISP's and asked about their ADSL2 plans, they advised me they couldnt provided 2 at my address, it then dawned on me maybe I wasnt getting 2 with telstra at the moment...by using DA's tool and looking closely at my plan I worked out Ive only been on 1 all this time, which was fine cause I can live with 1 speeds.....so Im changing from Telstra to internode (phone and i/net) will be saving $30+ per month just on internet and Im getting 25gig more and internode dont count uploads which telstra do, now Im getting more into downloading stuff that is a key reason to move also....all positives IMO

Thanks again for everyones help, its amazing how much Ive learnt on here in 2009, this time last year I wouldnt have been able to download movies, burn to disk, understand different file types, upgrade my hard drive on my PS3 myself etc....Im slowly getting out of the IT beginner class

Forgot to add, and this one amazed me the most, upgrading the RAM on my PC myself....was very proud when I checked the settings and I had doubled the RAM after a very simple operation - one I would have previously taken to the PC doctor and cost me $$$

Well stuff me, I just installed my Dads new modem who was previously on dialup and he's now getting twice the speed I get, stuff downloads on his line at over 1.2mbs, when I saw the speed it was coming down at I thought it was kbs and said that's bad until I realized my mistake.
I'm moving closer to town now!

1.2Mbps isn't fast by any means, but 1.2Mb is (8x 1.2Mbps).

LOL, and sorry to be pedantic, but you don't need to be closer to the town to get faster speeds ... closer to any exchange with good copper will help more.

Yeah sorry mate, it was a flippant post, unfortunately Im connected to the oldest exchange in the state and the copper is terrible. Can't complain too much though as Im the only person with ADSL of any sort in the street as I got in first.

Same state of play in Athelstone ... I'm one of the very few in my street as well.

The ridiculous thing is that the dslam down the street (200m away) is connected to the exchange (at least 8km away) with fibre, so in practical terms I'm 200m from the exchange ... only problem is that Tel$tra (thanks you greedy bastards) won't put the right equipment in the dslam or exchange to take advantage of that fibre, and even worse, won't let anyone else (like Internode who are itching to do it) either.

So I've got fibre to the node but I'm on a 1500/256 connection.

Please, please, will the Federal Government force Tel$tra to split into 2 ... wholesale and retail.
