Re: German Bundesliga

Postby johntheclaret » Mon Sep 21, 2009 2:19 am

I guess the biggest news around the Bundesliga for months has been the "will he won't he" drama of Ribery's move away from Bayern. 1st with Chelski, and laterly with big spending La Liga giants Real Madrid. By the looks of it, Bayern have already taken steps to cover any possible move by bringing in ex Chelsea star Ajen Robbin.

Ribery hints at Bayern stay

Frenchman admits he could extend contract with German giants. Franck Ribery has hinted that he may extend his stay at Bayern Munich by signing a new contract extension.
The winger appeared to be on his way out of the club after Real Madrid expressed an interest in the player throughout the summer.
But Bayern held firm and despite falling out with new boss Louis Van Gaal at the start of the season it now seems the Frenchman is toying with the idea of staying beyond 2011 - when his contract is due to run out.

Bayern's signing of Arjen Robben last month and the German club's improved form are thought to have contributed to the 26-year-old's change of heart.

Following on from the discussion concerning attendances, I think you are right Wedgie. I've seen somewhere a 'league' table of most watched leagues around the world and the Bundesliga did come out on top.

Just to back that up, here are the attendances for Friday and Saturday's games this week.

Bayern Munich 2 Nurnberg 1
Attend: 69000 Half-time: 0-0

Borussia M'gladbach 2 TSG Hoffenheim 4
Attend: 56511 Half-time: 2-1

Hannover 96 1 Borussia Dortmund 1
Attend: 43754 Half-time: 0-1

VfB Stuttgart 0 Cologne 2
Attend: 41000 Half-time: 0-1

VfL Bochum 2 Mainz 3
Attend: 16225 Half-time: 2-1

Schalke 04 1 Wolfsburg 2
Attend: 61000 Half-time: 0-0

And these attendances aren't just because the big sides happen to be playing at home this week. Last week Cologne had 50,000 and Borussia Dortmund attracted 80,557.

I think things have changed somewhat since that survey, as Man U now have (and Fill) a capacity of 85,000, the Emirates stadium now holds 65,000, and we will see the expansion of stadiums in the EPL once the recession is over. Liverpool, Spurs and Everton all have expansion plans on hold.

One of the problems with English staduims is that many were built before the war and in the town centres, so expansion has been a problem. Man City chose to move to Eastlands rather than try to improve Maine Road, and the same could be said of Derby, Coventy, sunderland, Middlesboro to name a few, who have all opted to move out of town.

Another major difference between the EPL and the Bundesliga is the type of staduim. English staduims are all seater and covered. Many of the Bundesliga stadiums don't have that constraint. Bayern Stadium for example with a capacity in excess of 90,000 has very little covered area, making it that much cheaper to construct.

Big blow this, for Hamburg, as the story says.

Hamburg dealt Guerrero blow. Top scorer could be out for up to six months

The striker is believed to have torn his cruciate knee ligaments on Wednesday when he was forced to leave the field after just 15 minutes of Peru's 3-1 defeat to Venezuela.
He is now due back in Germany on Friday when he will be examined by the club's medical team and faces up to six months on the sidelines if the initial diagnosis is confirmed.
It is a major blow for the league leaders as Guerrero has been on fire in the Bundesliga so far this term, netting four times in four games.

I guess this raises the same question asked by managers of all the top leagues. The conflict between club and counrty has intensified over thee years as the cost of relegation from the top flight gets bigger. Hamburg will be truly pissed at losing thier top striker for 6 months, and they have some justification, as it is the club who pays his wages.

On the flip side, the world governing body FIFA will argue that the top players must turn out for thier respective countries, and of course that the World Cup is the biggest single sport tournament on the planet.

6 games gone and already we have a managerial casualty.

Bochum sack Koller

Poor start sees Swiss coach lose his job

Bochum have sacked coach Marcel Koller after their poor start to the season.
Koller took over at Bochum in 2005 and steered them back to the Bundesliga in his first season in charge before helping them stay up for the next three seasons.
However, Bochum have lost four of their opening six games and Saturday's 3-2 home defeat to Mainz was the last straw for the club's board.

Little respect given to the man who took them for the 2nd division and has kept them in the top flight. I hope the Burnley board show more faith and respecr to Owen Coyle than the Bochum board have to Koller

Friday 25th September

Nurnberg 0 - 1 VfL Bochum

Diego Klimowicz's early goal earned Bochum a 1-0 win at Nurnberg to lift the managerless club out of the relegation zone.
Bochum sacked Marcel Koller after last weekend's defeat by Mainz left the club with just one win from their opening six Bundesliga games.
Frank Heinemann is in caretaker charge and he oversaw the narrow win at Nurnberg, which was secured by Klimowicz's seventh minute effort.
Paul Freier played in a cross from the flank and Klimowicz was on hand to score past Nurnberg keeper Raphael Schafer from close range.
Joel Epalle had a good chance to increase Bochum's lead just past the half-hour mark, while Dennis Diekmeier missed for Nurnberg midway through the second half.
The result moves Bochum up to 12th in the standings, while Nurnberg slip to third from bottom in the table, having won just once from seven attempts.

Dortmund were equally comfortable when they visited Karlsruhe. Egyptian striker Mohammed Zidan started them on their way to a 3-0 win in the third minute before Lucas Barrios ended the contest with a brace.

Hoffenheim overcame fellow top flight side and 2007 Cup winners Nurnberg away, a Per Nilsson goal after 35 minutes enough to see off the hosts.

Hertha offer lifeline to Ochs

Keeper eager to grasp his chance with Bundesliga strugglers. Hertha Berlin have signed goalkeeper Timo Ochs on a free transfer following an injury to Jaroslav Drobny.
Czech Republic shot-stopper Drobny is set to be out for several weeks and the Bundesliga's bottom club have brought in Ochs as a replacement.
Ochs was available on a free transfer after leaving Red Bull Salzburg in the summer and he has signed a contract until the end of the season.
