It's like all the chickens are now coming home to roost (no pun intended) after what happened in 1990.

20 years who would have thought the other SANFL clubs would have Port Adelaide Magpies future in their hands

Well it looks as though they might just get what they 1st wanted. I reckon if that was how it had've worked back then they'd still be in a financial muck hole now, only more people would hate them and hate them alot more.

what gets me is that only 12 months earlier port magpies played finals & were looking to improve & things seemed rosy & this year went backwards at a million miles an hour

heard a whisper today (this from someone that would know) that the port magpies will cease in 2011 (not sure whether that meant after or before that season) & the afl franchised port team want the magpies to wear a port power jumper in the final season

personally if a port team had to fold it should be the afl team
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Surely if Port Magpies fold or have to wear a Power jumper in the SANFL it will compromise them and their supporters even more, can't see that helping their position at all, they need all the friends they can get not more enemies.

Whilst on field they may have improved, the clubs been leaking money for much of the last decade, all despite remaining in the top few in memberships and attendances.

Yes all the other clubs and the SANFL are greedy. Port's bid for the AFL in 1990 was completely altruistic for the betterment of SA footy of course.
As was the Norwood-Sturt proposed merger? ;)

Which was put up at second licence time, and, at least, would have ensured Port were not rewarded for their past misdeeds... ;)

If I was one of the other SANFL clubs, there would be no way in hell I'd be voting to allow any sort of merger between the two bodies.

Do people seriously think the SANFL wouldn't survive with out the Magpies ?

If they can't get their shit together and the possibility is that they will fold, then so be it. No skin off my nose.

Port Adelaide have never given a shit about anyone else so why the hell should anyone give a shit about them.....

I doubt that the other clubs can do anything to prevent the two entities merging. That is a matter within their own powers (no pun intended) I would have thought.

They can however decide if and under what conditions a revamped Port participate in the SANFL as the clubs control the comp.

I don't think that's correct, mate.

The SANFL clubs have to approve any merger.

I think the chances of that are slim.

My memory of the Norwood meeting was that any light blue wasn't to be allowed on the red and blue jumper. ;)

Explains why Norwood only had 4 people voting no!

I was proudly 1 of those 4!!

Is the Power having a reserves team part of the fabric of this whole push, if so it surely has to be dead in the water unless there's a bag of money dangled infront of the clubs or one big stick being waved around the room.
Does anyone actually know what the REAL basics of this proposal are?

I for one will not be renewing my membership with the magpies and will stop attending games if the prison bars and magpie name are thrown away. My family has supported the boys in Black and white for nearly a century and to have that history and community connection shattered would take people like me away from the SANFL brand. I would rather go watch country footy or even turn to soccer if this crap goes ahead.
I may cop a lot of flak over this statement but I stand my feelings.

WOW !!!

There has been some VERY heated comment over this issue - throughout this thread. 8)

My views on PAFC are well documented so no need to go there again, but I will pose these questions;

1. Why are the SANFL even contemplating ANOTHER bailout - for EITHER club, Power or Magpies?

2. Where's the $240K (advance on next season's dividend) gone?

3. Is this the first of a number of clubs in financial trouble (I would suggest that my club too may have some monetary issues @ present)

I can't say that I'm happy with this proposed merger but it would be 'sad' not to go to Alberton & hang shit on them anymore.

Who would we all 'hate' then? Centrals? ;)

As has been pointed out elsewhere, Port have never been a rich club. They were on the financial rocks in 1983 if anyone can remember that. If they didn't have the business plan in place to survive in the market they wanted the trade in then perhaps the whole push back in 1990 was doomed from the start. They can blame the SANFL as much as they like.

I really dont have a problem with Port Power's interstate draftees playing for Port Adelaide in the SANFL, it's not really an issue. The big fear of them being one club from day one was that the Magpies were going to be a financial powerhouse and as we can see, that cant be the case with the Power not being financially viable.

Although perhaps there's another reason for amalgamation, there's been plenty of cases of companies taking over another only to close it down.

I've always stated that I hate to see a club die, but if the supporters dont really want it then perhaps it's time to go. They said the comp would die when the VFL expanded, they said it would die when the Crows were formed, they said it would die when Port had a team in the AFL. It's still going. Perhaps it's just another transition we'll accept in time.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I would think any merger would be knocked back by the 8 SANFL Clubs.

The SANFL want an 8 team Comp & have for sometime.

They did in 2003.

I must admit, getting rid of the bye would be very attractive to myself.

I reckon there has been a lot of Port supporters money going into other clubs at the gate over the decades. Love em or hate em they brought crowds into opposition venues. Port weren't the only ones trying to get into the AFL in 1990, but theres a few that were prepared to let them take the fall. Port didnt want an SANFL entity but were told they had to. You cant compare them with Torrens, Sturt or North. Did they have their supporter base split between 2 entities ? Its like comparing apples and bananas. I think for that alone they should be able to share their admin and have the first 3 picks in the mini- draft. Anything else is just small minded bitterness.

They also had rose pink at one stage. I'm still waiting for that one on the AFL heritage round since they're so proud of their past. Surely its not selective? :?

my point is Wedgie that even though North, Sturt and Torrens were all in financial strife they werent dealing with having their supporter base trying to support 2 entities. I agree these clubs deserved more support from the Sanfl at the time !, but Ports situation is quite unique.

Question, Where the hell did Port back in 1990 and again in '96/97 ever expect to play their "reserves" players if they never intended to have a face in the SANFL??????????? The VFL? I reckon if they had've got away with it back then, now they'd be crying poor by arguing they need a face in the SANFL.
I still want to know the basics of this proposal, and getting pretty pissed off that no one really knows.
