Best musicians in the country?

Postby RustyCage » Sat Nov 04, 2006 10:57 pm

Interested in peoples thoughts on who they think are some of the best musicians in the country at the minute.

My opinion:
Chris Cheney - The Living End. Best guitarist in the country. No one comes close.

Tim Rogers - You Am I. Great song writer. Great band leader. Solo stuff ok, but not my type of music.

Patience Hodgson - The Grates. Exceptional ability to throw her voice around. Interesting to see what their next albun is like.

Doctor Lindemans - Frenzal Rhomb - Great guitarist. Great on JJJ. Very funny.

Sarah McLeod - Superjesus/solo. Another great singer/songwriter. Her solo album is great, and the way her songs build up from start to end is something I like. One of the few people who does accoustic versions of their own songs that I actually like.

Tom Crease - Frenzal Rhomb. Frenzal Rhomb are extremely underrated as musicians. The bass lines in Frenzal are all over the place.

Rusty Hopkinson - You Am I. Very good drummer. Also the drummer for Radio Birdman at the minute.

IMO (remembering I am a grumpy old 40+ :P )

Guitar - Rowland S.Howard places(in no particular order) to Charlie Owen, Spencer P.Jones and Kim Salmon

Bass - Brian Hooper by a street (haven't seen much of Frenzal Rhomb to be honest though). Also haven't seen Andy kent in a while so my mind could change by tomorrow - depends of how You am I go tonight.

Songwriter - Tim Rogers for consistency edges out Nick Cave (in the last ten years away). Nick did give us The Boatman's Call but he also gave us Nocturama  Have heard a bit of Sarah McLeod and Superjesus - not my cup of tea to be honest.

Drums - Was a bit of a fan of Rustys until the last two Birdman shows - now I am true believer. He was superb and they are not an easy band too drum to.

Live act - I think The Beasts of Bourbon are the best live act in the country at the moment. The last two gigs I saw were amazing. Tight as a ducks bum and Tex Perkins back to his showman best. Mind you I missed their gig three weeks ago at the Prince and from all reports if I'd seen that I wouldn't be so high in their praise  The last time I saw Radio Birdman they were incredible (July at The Corner). Also seeing You am I tonight at the Prince for the first time in a while, so I'll be interested to see how that goes.

I can't disagree with you too much on those. I agree with Chris Cheeny, Tim Rogers, Doctor Lindemans and Rusty. Patience while a great entertainer wouldn't be on my list as a vocalist although

I think perhaps a lot of that has to do with the energy she puts in at live shows.

Tom Crease is a great bass player but most of the bass lines are written by their old bass player Lex who was as good as they come. Mind you Tom has filled the role well since coming in.

A few months ago went and saw Josh Pyke and Bob Evans when they toured together and was one of the best live shows I've been to.

Tim Rogers with You Am I would be the best live rock act I've seen consistently over the years. He is the ultimate rock star IMO.

Chris Cheney from Living End the best guitarist.
