West Adelaide sign two players

Postby wycbloods » Thu Dec 10, 2009 12:24 pm

MEDIA RELEASE

10th December 2009

The West Adelaide Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Jarrod Silvester and Natale (Nat) Caruso.

Jarrod (24) spent the past two seasons with Richmond FC playing five games in 2009. A Full Back, he has finished in the top three in Coburg FC's Best and Fairest for the past three seasons and was named in the VFL Team of the year in 2007 / 2008.

Nat (24) is a hard inside midfielder / utility with excellent skills. He has played 58 Senior games at Coburg FC in the VFL. Nat is pleased to be joining his brother, Fortunato, at the club.

Jarrod and Nat join previously announced recruits Travis Ronaldson and Adam Hartlett as new players for the 2010 season.

"We are very pleased with these singings and feel they put us in a strong position for the eagerly anticipated season ahead. These 4 players add nearly 300 games of State league experience to our developing side which we feel will help us take the next step in 2010." Scott Turner, General Manager - Football Operations.

Hopefully one more classy midfielder and i would say this seasons recruiting has been a success.

I think we can count Birris and Schmidt as midfield recruits this season as we barely had them last season. We have recruited very well so far, two backman (Hartlett and Silverster) this frees up Ferguson, a midfielder (N. Caruso) and a ruckman (Ronaldson) and we have not really lost anyone. Good times ahead (I hope).

I'd say it has already been a success. There's plenty of mid-field possibilities from our own players, IMO.

Is N Caruso any relation to F Caruso?

Westies do seem to be covering their losses with high quality recruits - yet its still hard to see which of the current sides that finished in the five that are going to drop out to see West move into the five? :?

West might be seriously pushing the 5 next year in my opinion.

That's 12 players on their books that are now classed as "imports". Which four will they flick 4 imports in 2011 when the maximum of 8 rule commences?

One must assume their finances have improved form the $700k loss last year now they are shellng out $15k for each of these VFL recruits? Pretty expensive for a potential one year stay?

Finances have improved, but the important thing is that most of the players, new and regular, are signing on for 2 or often 3 years.

It's a happy team at Westies right now.

Not all of them will be imports though in 2011?? Some may be in their third year this year so under the rules will not be an import in 2011 e.g. Cupido wont be one 2011 if he plays

Last year Glenelg had Kirkby, Ben Kane, Chris Kane and Sam Rudolph on their list as imports under the rule. In 2010 they will be "locals" So far pending on recruits Glenelg will only have Mills, Hall and A Grima as imports in 2011.

Anyone on a list for 2010 is not classed as an import for the commencement of that rule in 2011, I believe.

I thought the reason why they announced it last season (2009) was so that by 2011 only players recruited in 2009 would still be "imports" in 2011. Thus clubs were given time to get their list management right for 2011.

I do note with interest that the SANFL gave Norwood an extra leg-up with respect to the import rule by banning them from recruiting from outside their zone for 2010. Just another example of the league favouring Norwood.... ;)

I don't think that's right, smac.

Players on a list in 2007 don't count as imports, but those first on a list in 2008 do. I might be a year out with that (ie 2008 and 2009), but I think it works like that. I think they drop off as imports after 3 years.

Bunton, who are West's 12?

go through the list - anyone who arrived from an interstate state league team, including under 18s like Morris that has not completed 4 years at the start of 2011 is classed an import. Clubs can only have 8 on their books. maybe Goody Saints should stay in close with West to mind the excess that will have to be squeezed out!

I would like to see them continuing to foster juniors through to league level.

Great that they've recruited well, but I think the results of playing quality junior players have been evident in the improved performances.

Just off topic but south signed Four this year as shown here
http://messenger-news.whereilive.com.au ... for-south/
So South will need to watch their signings .

Nice to see Bunton has moved on from the Eagles and is now targeting Westies .For such a short poster is he going to tick off every club before 2010 starts ;)

I'm pretty sure it's 3 years Bunton. Once you've played 3 years in the SANFL you are no longer considered an import. Therefore when season 2011 starts 7 of our current list would be classed as imports - Krakouer, Davies, Langford, Birss, Silvester, N.Caruso and F.Caruso.
