1881 STATE SIDE - SA

Postby Mark_Beswick » Sat Nov 04, 2006 2:28 pm

I have compiled a comprehensive type-set list of SA State Sides from 1877 - 2006. The year 1881 is providing problems though. I once went to the Victorian State Library (seven years ago) and got hold of a paper via archives and found some missing details but ran out of time to search more papers. I'm sure their library has some defunt papers like we have at the mortlock which would have reported the game more thorougly.

I am missing team members for each of the two interstate games AND I never write down the Victorian Teams.... (Folly of me).

I have some question marks now I am typing squads into the scoreboard database with regards to some players actauly playing as I have so many contradictory notes which were written at various stages over the years. Can anyone help from SA or Victoria.

Here is what I have at present (PS - Each Team for this era played 20 players!) The game was played EMCG AND there was a game in Geelong a week later where SA played the boys from Sleepy Hollow!

Sorry about the posting - The first 0 means no goals and the second zero means no behinds for that player. It lined up perfectly on the pre-post to the forum.

Mark,

I don't know if you are familiar with a list compiled and published in the SA v WA Football Budget, June 12 1982. They list the names of all players who represented the state. It's interesting they make a note of a list of players who played matches of players who played state games against Victoria on 20, 24 August 1881. They say no teams were ever published.

Some players they listed who do not appear on your lists are:

W.Dixon - Norwood
T.R.Lewis - South Park
A.Shawyer - Victorian
D.C.Scott - Victorian

They also list "J.Watt - Port Adelaide".

Hope this helps in some way.

“The 1982 Budget was compiled by the Late Ian T Everett. This list does have errors and I have got his hard copy notes along with Norm Sowden of Victoria. The 1982 list misses at least two state games and has credited at least two payers as "ins" who were late withdrawals.” It was a great list for its time and was a fantastic starting point and reference.”

I am sure there is an obscure paper in victoria that reported sport heavily and they may have given the teams. In SA we have had papers like the SA Licensed Vituallers Gazette and Sportng Chronicle" which was brilliant but not well known by people - It is one of many regular papers that ciculated in the mid 1870's to 1920's.

In 1914, we found a paper that printed all the carnival teams where no victorian or SA paper had them in their entirety - I think the answer is out there!

Thanks anyway

Mark

Being in Melbourne I can chase that up for you but it won't be for at least a week as (believe it not) next week I'll be back in Adelaide  Speaking of which these papers you mentioned "SA Licensed Vituallers Gazette" and "Sportng Chronicle" are they available for viewing at the State Library by special request? I've gone about as far as I can go with "The Advertiser" and "The Register".
Earlier this year when I was over at the State Library I requested copies of The SA Footballer (circa 1888) to read and they were gotten from the archives and I got to see them in the special reading room. They were photocopies of the originals (not that that mattered) but all the news was Port, Norwood and South and Sweet FA on Medinidie
Speaking of state players am I right in thinking that Jim Be(a)sley was the first North player to play state footy(in 1894)?
"They got Burton suits, ha, you think it's funny, turning rebellion into money"

Hi Leaping,

You are crrect with regards to Jim Be(a)sley being the first rep from NAFC to play for the Croweaters!

Regarding the Licensed Vituallers Gazette and Sporting Chronicle, - When I last used it I had to order it into the old reading room BUT I think I saw the same paper a few months ago in the mirco-filmed section. I'm not sure if the whole series has been microfilmed though. If I can get in next friday I will check it out for you.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN LICENSED VITUALLERS GAZETTE AND SPORTING CHRONICLE (Official Title)
There is also the LICENSED VITUALLERS ADVOCATE > I'm not sure if I have been through this paper though!

There are so many papers to check through and so little time. I hope you get time to check this one out - Its worth it!

Regards
Mark

ps - Thanks for the offer re checking out the 1881 year - I think it might take a few trips and a few papers to nut out. Thanks Again

pps - The database I use is a creation of Peter Anderson. If you are interested, let me know.
