Unless you do what I did and read it aloud, in a Scottish accent.

Magnus Magnusson's translation of the story of Eirik the Red's colonisation of Greenland and Leif the Lucky's exploration of the North American continent in the 10th century.

Not exactly a heavyweight of the literary world but an interesting little book about some amazingly brave explorers considering their lack of the technology and materials we all take for granted.

*edit* Just done a tiny bit of cheating thanks to Wiki...

On the return voyage, Leif rescued an Icelandic castaway named Þórir and his crew – an incident that earned Leif the nickname Leif the Lucky (Old Norse: Leifr hinn heppni).

Took me forever to find this but turns out its like number 20 on Angus & Robertsons Top 100.

Finished it about 4 weeks ago. Looking for something similar. Have been looking for the Tripod series because I remember my yr 6 teacher reading it to us, but cant remember much about them...looked for about an hour in Borders and couldnt find em...

You know 1984 is in the public domain in Australia? Look it up on the Australian project Gutenberg website and you can download it for free.

I loved the Tripods trilogy (The White Mountains, The City Of Gold And Lead, The Pool Of Fire). John Christopher was the author IIRC.

For stuff similar to 1984, Yevgeny Zamyatin's "We" is often compared to it, but I've never read it myself.

Try some of these:
Aldous Huxley - Brave New World
Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451
Kurt Vonnegut - Player Piano

Owned it for years, but never read more than a page here or there, hopefully better than the Traci Lords Bio.
