I realised after I said it. The rookie draft is the heart breaking one, we lose players only to watch them play local league in another state.

He kept saying (numerous times) how great it was for SA that these lads were drafted. Sure, agreed it's great for the players drafted, but I fail to see the benefit for SA that these players are lost from the State.

I guess they are a sort of insurance claim on the basis that, "This bloke might develop into a player and we can't risk having not grabbed him."spell_check wrote:And most of the time you wonder why they were drafted (or rookied) in the first place.Barto wrote:I realised after I said it. Word is he just wants a year off - pity though. I really felt for him when he missed the Ressies GF cos he played his ONE league game for the year in the league prelim loss

This is one thing that has diluted the talent pool of the SANFL for years.

As well as the lack of financial rewards playing SANFL matching the commitment required. If you can get similar or better playing in a lesser league and not having to put in the same hours that can be attractive to some.
It's a shame to lose some great talent this way.

I think it would be great if the SANFL clubs lessened the load slightly, but which coach would be game enough to make the first move? You'd be giving every other club a leg up.
