jackpot jim wrote:Shows how much of a JOKE the so called 'world sport' is when just 1 incident accounts for the entire score in 90 minutes for a team (1 goal) thats ulitimately determines their entry to a world cup. Same goes for the 'Beach Ball' incident a month ago in the EPL.
Take a look at the pathetic scorelines from the world cup qualifiers the other day, 1-0, 1-0, 1-0 0-1 etc etc etc. What thrilling stuff NOT ! I mean it's just PATHETIC.
Change the stupid rules, make the goals bigger or whatever it takes to allow more goals and so results like 8-5, 6-4, 10-8 are more typical so when a side totally flukes a goal like the Beach ball incident or cheats like Henry did, it doesn't have such an impact on the game and is less likely to influence the result.

Take the AFL grand final for example when the ridiculous scenario occurred when St Kilda scored that double goal but fortunately it didn't cost Geelong victory bcos 1 goal in a game of AFL only accounts for about 3-4% of goals scored in a game where as in soccer 1 goal accounts for about 50% of scoring on most occassions so an UNFAIR goal in soccer will just about ALWAYS have a bearing on the result.

for a start, this is a soccer/football whateva you call it in your words forum , if you dont like then theres other topics to express your facts and figures.
as for the 1 goal win in games etc that your on about, yep it does get boring at times, but wheres the fun in winning by 50 points or over 100 points??? i.e. AFL. why kick 10 goals to win when you only need to kick 1 to win the game. yeah lets kick 25 goals and the other team 4 goals, how boring is that???

Thierry Henry has been the ultimate footballer who from my view point has always been fair.
On this occasion he fkd up.
Whilst I haven't seen his celebration, if he went to the ref and pleaded guilty, the goal still would've counted.
Ref's don't change their mind, either way, and I.m sure some team mates of his from a distance wouldn't of seen the handball so they would've been elated when celebrating the goal with Henry.
It's just one blemish over a career that ranks him up with the very best over a long period of time.
Pity the stakes were so high for the paddys.

Henry's handball was poor form. He cheated, like many others in this and other sports. As for a reply, that simply isn't going to happen. The only time FIFA would ever consider replaying the game is if the ref misinterpreted the rules (got them wrong), and in this case the ref simply didn't see it happen so end of story.

But lets not get carried away with the "Irish are out of the World Cup because of one incident" plop. If they had won more of the group games and qualified as group winners they wouldn't have been in the playoff's in the first place.

Henry obviously used his hand to guide the ball to his foot. The central ref didn't see it so the goal should stand. The linesman however probably should have seen it and maybe this is an example of why they should be able to call things like this?

Having said that Henry would have known he used his hand so therefore at the very least curb his celebration to show some form of respect.
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

FAI renew appeal for France-Ireland replay after Thierry Henry backs calls
From correspondents in Dublin, Ireland
November 21, 2009 .Irish football chiefs have renewed an appeal for FIFA to order the handball-marred World Cup playoff with France to be replayed, after Thierry Henry said a re-match would be the "fairest solution."

The Football Association of Ireland "called on the French Football Federation ... to join with it and the captains of both the French and Irish teams, Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane, to request a replay from FIFA," it said.

Earlier the French captain repeated his admission that he had controlled the ball with his hand before the decisive goal in Wednesday's disputed match in Paris, but insisted it had been an "instinctive" reaction.

In a statement released in Dublin after a meeting of its management board, the FAI said that only a replay "would protect the integrity of the game worldwide and the pride of the French national team".

It noted that the French Football Federation had said it would "comply with whatever FIFA decides and welcomed the French team captain's statement that a replay would be the fairest solution".

"Lastly, the FAI's Board of management noted FIFA's earlier response on the issue and has sent a separate reply," it said, referring to a FIFA statement saying that it would not order a replay.

Ireland captain Keane also welcomed Henry's admission that a replay would be the fairest option.

"As captain of the France team, to make such a statement took courage and honour, and all of us recognise that," he said.

"As captain of the Republic of Ireland team, I would also be happy for a replay to happen in the interest of fair play so that whichever team qualifies, can do so with their heads held high.

"We can only hope that the French Football Federation might accept the wishes of both captains in the best interests of the game," added Keane

But the French Football Federation (FFF) was quick to scotch any such talk, while expressing its sympathy with Ireland.

"The FFF understands the disappointment and bitterness of the Ireland players, management and supporters. The federation never sought to deny the refereeing error which saw the equalising France goal allowed," it said in a statement.

"At the end of the match and because French football itself has suffered in the past by events of a similar nature, the FFF management expressed their regrets and sympathy to their Ireland counterparts."

The federation added: "Thierry Henry, captain of the France team, spontaneously recognised his handball. He did it at the end of the match to Irish players and the referee, and then to the media.

"This candour and honesty are trademarks of the exemplary career that he has enjoyed at all his clubs as well as the national team. Given the pressure he has come under, the French Football Federation lends him total support."

The federation ended by saying: "The Football Assocation of Ireland asked FIFA for the game to be replayed. FIFA has today rejected this request, recalling the laws of the game which apply to all football matches.

"During matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final. As a result, the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed.

"The FIFA decision is binding and applies to both federations."

The cheat is now saying there should be a replay, knowing all too well there wont be one.

I'll modify what wycbloods said - what more do you expect from people that dive and scream broken neck when someone slaps them. The referees allow these prima donnas to regularly get away with cheating, so what else do you expect him to do?

So all aussie rules players are thugs in that case, I mean Barry Hall thumps whoever he feels like on the park so everybody else must do the same right?

This might surprise you but simulation, or diving, is a part of aussie rules football now as well....
