ARIA's

Postby Dutchy » Sun Oct 29, 2006 11:14 pm

Watched the ARIA's tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it for a change - highlights -

- No Ben Lee or Missy Higgins
- No actual host for the night which made it flow
- Return to mainly bands winning awards
- some great LIVE (no lip sinc) performances
- IT was quick and to the point, no long draged out pieces, all over in under 3 hours
- Mightnight Oil inducted into the Hall of Fame, never have I seen a more worthy inductee
- Bono's tribute was sensational
- I cringed when I frist heard Silverchair were going to cover an Oils song but I was impressed with the end product, well done lads, and great to see them pick and old classic "I dont wanna be the one" not one of the more obvious tunes...
- The Oils acceptance speeches were short, sharp and to the point...they were truely touched
- Alright Ill confess Im an Oils tragic, but do others agree? They have had a huge influence on modern day aussie bands and Ive heard Oil influence in tracks from The Living End, Whitlams, Powderfinger etc....suttle but they are there...Its very rare these days that you can say a band has given more than they have rec'd over a career but the Oils are in this category

Great work 10 for an entertaining night...

The ARIAS has really changed to become much more populist & kiddie-friendly in recent years. I'm not saying that's a bad thing necessarily but when a 'real' band like the Oils comes out you really take notice. Loved Rob Hirst's talk about get-famous-quick TV shows which earned him a huge applause. Would loved to have seen the Idols at that stage!!!

I sort of felt sorry for the Idols at that point. He was more so having a go at the networks/producers for putting those shows on TV rather than the young people who audition and ultimately, get on the show.

As for the live performances - they were great.
Always like John Mayer and the duet with Pete Murray was great (similar to his duet with Paul Simon - Slip Sliding Away). Bernard Fanning was great as well.

The ARIAS lost me for good (not that I ever rated them that much anyway)back in 1992 when Frente won the best Alternative act. That rates up there with Henry Kissinger winning the Noble Peace Prize in 1973 as one of the best jokes of all time.
Reading the list of award winners from last night it seems I'm still not missing much.
Bernard Fanning????
Wolfmother???
I remember hearing Wolfmother for the first time in 1973, and not liking them then.
And the crowning glory - proving once and for all you'll never go broke catering to morons - four neutered white boys calling themselves Human Nature release an album of covers of some of the greatest soul songs of all time, and it's the biggest selling album in Australia. What's on the cards next year boys an album of Hendrix covers???
Wish I watched it just to see Rob Hirst get stuck into the Idles (sic) though.

Nup, they've just released a 2nd album of motown classics. Saw it advertised on an ad break and had to ask Mrs Wedgie if it was fair dinkum or just a piss take, fair dinkum unfortunately. ****!
I don't mind Wolfmother, but I actually saw them before anyone had heard of them when they were the warm up for the Gurge a couple of years ago at Heaven as it was then known. They were a bit more hardcore then, but I did giggle over your comment that you didn't like them in 1973. How true you are! :)

Turned off as soon as Rove stepped on stage.

Fair's far LL...Wolfmother are a pretty accomplished cover band.

How bad were The Veronica's? Sheesh!

Heard the latest 'Human Nature' Motown rape at the shops today. Begs the question: why don't people just go out and buy an old Motown album?

Good to see the Hoods bag a couple of awards.

I personally can't stand the Pete Murrays and Bernard Fannings of this world - totally safe, dull and forgettable nanna rock (IMHO of course). However, heaps of people like them so I must be wrong. Still, millions of people bought Roxette albums too....

Anyway, I had to laugh when Borenard Fanning won best album (yawn) - he made an impassioned plea to all the young rockers in the house to get inspired by the socio-political passion of the Oils and write some rocking protest tunes that raise us out of our collective apathy, to rise up against 'the man' or something like that.

This coming from a man whose biggest hit consists almost entirely of "I just wanna wish you well, I just wanna wish you well..."

Human Nature's shlock performance was simultaneously one of the most hilarious and depressing things I've seen on Australian TV. Hilarious because their dance moves looked like they were borrowed from 'Hooray for Everything' and the fact that, well, they really don't sing very well. Depressing because millions are shelling out for this lazy and cynical honky approximation of soul - allowing them to do a Rod Stewart and cash in with a Motown Vol II. Useless f***wits.

Zippzap hence the term pop music it popular every man and friggin dog likes it (supposedley).

Great to see so many awards presented to performers that get air time on JJJ (Hoods, The Audreys, Clare Bowditch and Bob Evans) and not the commercial crap of Nova & the Austero networks. Wish I converted years ago to the js much better music and variety plus no lame ass competitions that drag on for weeks

Firstly when you watch a show like that you know you are not going to like every act - Human Nature was the only one I didnt enjoy, alright they are Australian but their cover isnt....why play an american cover at the ARIA's?

Overall I went away from the night thinking that Oz rock is in reasonable hands, 12 months ago I wasnt so sure with the Lee/Higgins show...

And why have American stars at the ARIAs? Johnny Knoxville is funny but he didn't need to be there. Jesse McCartney?? Wouldn't have a new album out would he?
