Breastfeeding v Formula

As others have stated i think most women would prefer to breastfeed if their body allowed them too but anyone who wanted to formula feed their child shouldn't feel pressured from anyone especially midwives or nurses. My wife breast fed our first for about 5 months and then he went onto formula, the only difference i found is that he hadn't had a cold whilst being breastfed but got one at about 7-8 months. We are expecting twins in the next 14 weeks so she will be giving the breast feeding a go for as long as she can depending if she can keep up with two babies.

Dad cannot get out of bed at 3 AM to administer the boob.

Ergo I say Breast Is Best!

I think you'll find there are means that allow mum to stockpile 'expressed milk' for just such an occasion...ergo you've no bloody excuse not to help out  ;)

as we have da twin we used formula as it is kinda hard to feed to kids at the same time. And with twins it is easier to feed them at the same time when one woke up for a feed we fed them both.

Junior 1 ( Boy ) on the boob until about 4 weeks old then formula as Mrs.Boon was unable to keep him 'satisfied'.

Junior 2 ( Girl ) on the boob until about 7 months and happy to do so before the formula began.

My opinion? No right, no wrong, what ever makes baby happy and the Mum should never, ever be made to feel inadequate because of her body's inability to cope.

Go the boob! Go the formula! Whatever works.....

Our daughter (now nearly 13 months) got used to having both.
It did mean that I had to get up in the middle of the night to do some feeding occasionally, but most of the work was still done by Mrs DW.
However, we had Lil DW trained so she we were only having to feed her before we went to bed (around 10pm) before the morning service.
TBH - that was a really nice time to spend with my little girl.

Plus Austar was running the whole series of Sopranos back to back for the length of the time we were doing that feed. That was pretty good.

Another benefit of breastfeeding is for the mum to return to her pre-pregnancy body quickly. Also i think the bonding between mother and child during breastfeeding is great for the both of them.

It took us a while to find a formula which agreed with Baylee as she had pretty bad reflux and colac, but once we found the one everything has gone smoothly.

I don't know much about the science behind breastfeeding v formula but from a practicallity sense formula is brilliant mainly for my wife, as it means i have to help as much as possible.

good to see lee is a bay girl :D :D ;)

seriously though who cares which way a baby is fed as long as the baby is healthy ffs....little bayman was breastfed for about 3 months & then waned off it to the formula & when on the formula pseudo got it in one i had to get up EVERY BLOODY TIME

I must prefer the breast. Playing with a tin just isn't the same.

But I digress..

My daughter was 2 in March and when she was a little tacker (ok, a littler tacker) we went all out with breast milk and the missus (at the time) was expressing as well, so we had bottles of breast milk in the fridge.

This worked really well for times when I had to get up and help.

What ALSO helped was the fact she was born seven weeks premature - coinciding with the FIRST GAME of the Cricket World Cup in the West Indies! She went from being due AFTEr the final to BEFORE the first game! :)

Sorry to bring this back up but it is in the news again. looks like the government are still going to push the breast is best policy.

having had 3 months experience at this whole feeding baby thing i can say that for us breast didnt work. we lasted about a week, with the missus in pain, uncomfortable and emotional, feeling like she was "doin it wrong". once we switched to the bottle little abigail pretty well slept straight through the night!! should have seen the releif on her face when she started sucking and actually started geting something from it!

I still think that in general the boob is best but there still needs to be a system in place to recognise and support those that are having difficulty, and who the bottle would be the better option. we have had a ew instances of people "looking down their nose" at us but nothing a good angry stare couldnt chase off!

Well said and good point ... just like women who have a ceasa should not be made to feel inferior to those that have a 'natural' birth.

Our two year old was bottle fed from day 2 and our 7 week old has been also! I cant imagine how grumpy the cook would be if she had to all the feeds along with looking after the two of them all day long! The little one now sleeps from about 7:30 at night through to me feeding her at 11 and then my wife gets up to feed her in the night, between us we each get at least 6-7 hours sleep a night, would not happen if on the boob!

Or you could always try this approach...

http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/forums/index.php?showtopic=725792

I breastfed my friend’s baby. Now she won’t talk to me.

I seem to have ruined a friendship – with my best friend! - and I don’t know to fix it.

Kerri and I are really close friends since school and we were so excited when we realised that we were going to have our first babies within 6 months of each other! I had my little boy last November and she had her little girl in May.

We’re both breastfeeding (altho my son is on solids as well now). A few weeks ago we spent the morning together and Kerri left her daughter with me for an hour while she went to the supermarket. Almost as soon as she left her daughter woke up and was obviously hungry, so I breastfed her. It just seemed like the natural thing to do and I didn’t even think twice about it. But when I told Kerri later she absolutely freaked out! She told me it was disgusting and that it could have endangered her daughter’s health. She told me I must be insane to do something like that.

I was really offended. I told her to chill out and not be so uptight. Anyway, the result was that she left and won’t return my calls or emails now. I don’t want this to ruin a ten year friendship, I just don’t know what to say to her. If the situation has been reversed, I wouldn’t have blinked an eye at her feeding my son.
