Glenelg retirements: Cranston and Block to follow Fisher?

GONE: Adam Fisher, pictured here with Port's Jarrod Young, has retired.
GLENELG is at risk of losing three quarters of its starting onball unit, with Lucas Block and Trevor Cranston a chance to follow retired best and fairest winner Adam Fisher out the door at the Bay.
Fisher, a dual club champion award winner for the Tigers, called an end to his career last week after finally succumbing to a debilitating knee injury.
The 25-year-old said he was disappointed to finish without tasting the ultimate success but his body had simply had enough.
``I don’t have much cartilage left in the right knee,’’ Fisher said.
``It would flare up after every game which takes its toll mentally.
``It’s disappointing to go out the way we did but personally to win two best and fairests, including one in my last season, and also help the club work its way in to a strong position has been satisfying.’’
The 92-game player, who joined the Tigers in 2005 from Melbourne’s rookie list, said he would stay in Adelaide.
He is unsure whether to play locally but is toying with the idea of joining former Glenelg team-mate Marcus Burdett at Mount Compass in the Great Southern Football League.
Fisher’s retirement is a huge blow for the Tigers who were eliminated in straight sets from this year’s finals after winning their second straight minor premiership.
And the losses might not end with the blonde-haired tyro, with ruckman Trevor Cranston and midfielder Lucas Block also weighing up their SANFL futures.
Glenelg football operations manager Ken Applegarth said Cranston was considering returning to Victoria.
``He told us last year that this season could be his last but he’s also now thinking he might have some unfinished business,’’ Applegarth said.
``Trevor always takes his time at the end of the season. He’s getting married this weekend so footy is the last thing from his mind.
``He’ll let us know of his decision when he’s back from his honeymoon.’’
Block, who suffers from groin problems, will wait until meeting with club doctor Marc Cesana before making a decision on his future.
``He’s been having problems with his groins and is having them assessed,’’ Applegarth said.
``He’s also got the opportunity to expand his (carpentry) business so he’s got a bit to think about.’’
Dr Cesana returns from holiday in the next month.
