Easiest way out of a stupid debate:

Am I the only one with that opinion? Is everyone else who thinks the same as me stupid?

Gee I bet Foley thought "Admitting depression will encourage others to do the same. I haven't given its effect in the polls a second thought."

You are the only stupid one Booney.

I listened to the first part of his interview on ABC radio this morning. I doubt you'd remain cynical after that.

The cynical ones on here seem to be the usual suspects, as expected, so fair enough, but to those who think it's politically motivated, are you really serious?

Do you really think that admitting you suffer from depression is the way to promote yourself as a future Premier? Of course it's not, it's almost a disqualifying factor, in political terms.

I felt some compassion with Andrew Robb recently when he revealed he suffered similarly. Sometimes cynicism seems to be the standard response.

That's a pity.

I dont know whether its true or not, but this week has certainly been politically motivated

Rann has made an idiot of himself trying to blame the Liberals when they actually made a fair comment

By the looks of the comments section of The Advertiser, I'd bet there are a few Labor Party media minders who have suddenly caught a severe case of depression.

Firstly they try to soften Foley's very bad image on Saturday - population backlash - then pull the depression ploy to counteract the damage, and BANG, it all blows up in their face

This one is nearly as bad as the MHS e-mail.

You're starting to become borderline unhinged Jimmy. The Liberal Party eventually had to come out and admit they rig The Advertiser's polls and bombard the comments section of political articles (excluding the non-existant articles of Liberal politicians caught dangerous driving) and if the type of people that inhabit the comments section of Adelaide Now were a genuine reflection of society then Howard would still be in power & the SA Libs would be cruising towards victory come March.

The fact you & Psyber in the past (about his nuclear power fantasies) have chosen to use the general sentiment of the comments on Adelaide Now to bolster your beliefs says far more about you than anything else.

The broad incidence of depressive illness in the community is high - about 15% counting all degrees of severity.
Of this, about half - 8% of the incidence - is attributable to a genetic predisposition.
The two types are identifiable by taking a good look at the symptom patterns and family history.
The genetic type does usually respond to antidepressant medication, while the reactive type does better with support and counseling.
[Lumping the two groups together is why researchers get results that say antidepressants don't work.]
Of course, they can overlap, and so you can have a mixed state.

There are plenty of people out there with effectively treated depressive illness holding down high-powered jobs.
The tragedy is that people put off seeking treatment, possibly out of fear of discrimination among other things.

Jimmy, I respect that you have your opinion and are quite entitled to it, but I really can't see someone who suffers from such an illness outing themself for some perceived political gain ... it just doesn't make sense.

Every goverment member of parliament could take the next 6 months off and not campaign in the leadup to the election and they'd still romp home ... the Libs have absolutely no chance of forming a government, so why come up with such a risky strategy?

So I can't really fathom why you're so sure this is all a stunt.

Totally agree, but why do Saturday's story then? Am I barking up the wrong tree and Foley is just trying to get his missus back?
