I used to think that until a Port supporter set me straight about 6 or 7 years ago even showing me some copies of documents which proved his case, I was happy to admit I was wrong when it became obvious. It was a shame as I liked to tell him how my SANFL club had won more flags than his!
The name didn't but the club did, the club changed its name from the Port Adelaide Football Club to the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club in 1996 so a new business could use that name. Same way the VFL changed its name to the AFL, Nth Melbourne changed its name to the Kangaroos and back again, Garry Hocking changed his name to whiskas and back, the WAFL changed their name to the Westar Rules and back, etc, etc. Same entity, different name.
(ie players who played at the PAFC in 1996 and the PAMFC in 1997 didn't need new contracts as it was the same club but players who played in the PAFC in 1996 and the PAFC (Power) in 1997 did need a new contract as completely new business)
A name change or taking someone else's doesn't change things drastically. Just because I was named Anthony did it mean I'd be a saint, mind you I do like the sound of Anthony the Great!
The club that we refer to as the Magpies here in SA have existed for well over 100 years.
Barto's analogy is a good one but it doesn't refer to how the new entity is destroying itself at a quicker rate than the previous one and only exists because of Centurion's greenpeaces generosity who have no problems saving this bastard animal but hasn't stepped forward to save some beautiful historical and important animals before!

Some former players also criticised wearing the heritage guernsey and called for the club to distance itself from its previous history in order to attract a wider fan base. Roger James says he had always viewed the Power as a new club "I understand Port's background but as far as I'm concerned the Power was started from scratch, has only been in the (AFL) competition for 11 years and was made up of players from every SANFL club, to me, its heritage goes back to 1997 and that's why I question the decision to wear a Magpies jumper." Josh Francou commented that "It's time to move on, I can understand Port wanting to recognise its history but there is still a stigma attached with the Port Magpies in that if you don't like them you absolutely hate them and I think Port - while still being respectful of its heritage - has to move away from that."

They have been divided and conquered -
Power should accept that they will not be accepted by the SANFL supporter base at large until they break away from the stigma of the old magpies. If they were smart they would remove the 1870 rubbish from their jumper and replace it with 1996 - Call themselves Power only and stop the creed rubbish. OR they can push ahead as they are and contimue alienating the majority and watch their supporter base dwindle and their financial backing dry up without sympathy or tears from 8 (maybe 9 after their treatment of the maggies) SANFL clubs
Thats my rant and rave for the month

I've heard a couple of other former players agree with that position as well. So who is right? The blokes who wore the jumper or some fan boys on the internet?
I'd be interested to hear Russell Ebert's opinion on the quiet.
Someone once posted Port's club association number. If they're a different club, how can that be transferred from one football club to another?
I mean, can Sturt move to the Parade and call themselves Norwood and Norwood move to Unley and call themselves Sturt?
