There was a documentry a while back, Loius Theroux I think, looking at what it's like in a prison including death row. He asked about the last meal thing and if they can order whatever they like. Apparently they can choose whatever is in stock in the kitchens or they can order fast food if there's a local branch and that's about it.

Last Meal: Moore had a final meal request of Kraft Cheese & Macaroni and Beef Flavored Rice-A-Roni.

The skinny: Moore, 32, a self-described fascist who adopted the dark punk and goth lifestyle was executed by lethal injection for the slaying of a San Antonio police officer 12 years ago.


Not much of a last meal this one. Ive read quite a few on those sites, alot of inmates aked for nothing while 1 asked for 16 pepsi's!

As a person with a fair bit of Irish ancestry I like this speech by the famous Irish patriot Robert Emmet. I have a lithograph of Emmet making this speech in court, that was bought to Australia by my mother's family in the 1860s.

Emmet was sentenced to death by "hanging drawing and quartering" which was the penalty for treason againt the crown. In the early 1800s this blood thirsty sentence was reduced to hanging until dead then beheading of the corpse.

I was watching that Jamie Oliver tours USA episode last night in New Oreleans.

They say Okra came with the slaves from Africa. When they were sent to the states they would put the seeds in their ears so not to get caught carrying anything. Mainly used in stews or Gumbo as they call it. looks like a young zuchini




A 1 sauce is an american steak sauce made by G.F. Heublein & Brothers, a bit like HP sauce here

Holberg robbed and murdered an 80 year old white male in his home. The victim was struck with a hammer and stabbed nearly 60 times. The weapons used were: a paring knife, a butcher knife, a grapefruit knife, and a fork. A lamp pole had been shoved more than 5 inches down the victim's throat

This would have to be the worst of the lot!

That's probably a subject for another thread.

Whilst i do understand your point regarding the length of sentence for murder in the respective parts of the world i fail to see how the profession or profile of the victim is in any way significant.

Agree with RR that the point about the sentence is valid but a pet hate of mine is how the public and media in particular make a big thing about sentences or lack of, or releases of criminals who've committed crimes against high profile people in society. The crime is the bloody same no matter who it's committed against and can only imagine how the families of unknown victims would feel.

Incredible that an advanced nation is still doing things like this to its citizens. The yanks certainly have been inventive iin coming up with execution techniques that by their slowness mentally torture the convict, it takes roughly 20-30mins from Go to Whoa in a lethal injection execution, with the convict being fully aware a good bit of the time. In contast when the UK and Australia had capital punishment hanging could be carried out in 10 seconds or less. I think revenge rather than deterrence is the primary motive for capital punishment in the US. Thank God we have moved away from this practice, but I think for heinous crimes life inprisonment should mean life.
