Thanks SANFLnut for retrieving the topic and your idea could work - it could be footy's equivalent of 20/20 cricket. Lets just keep suggestions rolling in - brainstorming in & out of the square - sooner or later one of us will come up with an idea that we will all think "Yep that will work"

Start the u/18's season a week or 2 early and give them the prime time slot (perhaps with senior trials in the reserves timslot before it)?

Yeah, I like the 20/20 analogy. Maybe play each game 20 minutes each way and steal the name too!

Could be a good use of Footy Park so that SANFL competition actually get some benefit from this great resource.

20/20 cricket has brought that real party atmosphere to Cricket - can the same be done for pre season SANFL footy? Do we need to bring in some new rules like the supergoal, play on off the posts, 15 a side, free kick every time it goes OOB to keep things ticking along or would clubs prefer to play legit trials at that time of year.

Time for SANFL to actually show some innovation and leadership with something like this. Great chance for some media attention that week, get a big name sponsor on board who would get some good airtime that week. Even if there are only 1500 per club that come along then that is over 20000 for the day by the time you include the extra numbers that Port & Crows should attract.

Lets expand this idea - a 12 team lightning carnival featuring 9 SANFL teams, NT, Crows & Power. Each match consists of 15-20 min halves. Use the AFL NAB cup rules re 9 point supergoals etc. However goals kicked by the SANFL & NT teams in matches against the 2 AFL teams are worth double (eg normal goal 12 pts & supergoal 18 pts).

If the event was crammed into one day the schedule could be like this:

10.30 Sturt/South
11.30 Glg/Port Magpies
12.30 Eagles/Nwd
1.30 North/West
2.30 CD/winner Sturt & South
3.30 NT/winner Glg & Port
4.30 Port Power/winner Eagles & Nwd
5.30 Crows/winner North & West
6.30 Winner 3.30 v winner 4.30
7.30 winner 2.30/winner 5.30
9.15 Grand Final between 6.30 & 7.30 winners.
If results went to form you would see Port Power playing NT at 6.30 followed by Crows playing CD at 7.30 - 2 interesting games of footy to watch especially with the underdogs trying to kick 18pt goals! Surely the last 3 matches of the night could be televised by someone for the right price...

They tried the quick game at Wayville in the 90s, only me and about 3 other family and friends rocked up.
BTW North are the reigning premiers of the lighting game. :D

It was indeed. It was a nine-a-side demonstration, and was held during the Sports & Leisure Expo (or some such) at Wayville. The nine-a-side comp did get some mention in the press; the Port v Glenelg game was billed as a chance for Glenelg to atone for the previous year's Grand Final loss.

Seriously it would be an ideal kick start for the SANFL.

Round 1:

Fri (N) Norwood vs Central (Norwood)
Sat (D) West vs South (Richmond)
Sat (D) Eagles vs North (Thebarton)
Sun (D) Glenelg vs Sturt (Glenelg)

Bye: Port

The presence of the 2 AFL teams will attract quite a few thousand - us SANFL diehards would be there earlier in the day to see our respective clubs play & probably stay on to barrack for whichever SANFL teams get to take on the Crows & Power in the evening. Could be a SA Footy Day - sponsored by usual SA Great identities eg The Advertiser,5AA, proceeds go to the Mc & Mc Foundation etc... I just think that spare weekend could be put to use - otherwise its a weekend of gardening chores for me !

Yeah, I think asking clubs to get organised for more than one period in a day would scare the pants off coaches and fitness coordinators/rehab specialists/whateveryouwanttocallthems. The whole warm up-play-cool down/cease up-play agian thing may be an issue, hence the original suggestion of playing 2 short games back to back. Glad others are onto the idea though, like the addition of the NT team too.
