Was about to let you guys know too...just been announced on the BBC website...

Former Test umpire Shepherd dies

Former umpire David Shepherd has died after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 68.

Shepherd officiated in 92 Tests and 172 one-day internationals, including three World Cup finals.

Shepherd was famous for his aversion to the 'Nelson' - scores with a multiple of 111 - which made him hop at the crease between deliveries.

Shepherd, from Devon, played county cricket for Gloucestershire, from 1965-79, hitting 10,672 runs.

He was appointed as a first-class umpire in 1981 and was swiftly elevated through the ranks, making his Test debut in an Ashes Test four years later.

More to follow.

F*** He was one of the good 'uns. A character like Dickie but despite their "idosyncracies" were damn good umpires. Billy take note.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Yeah, I thought he was a good umpire. And always remember him for going off at Waqar Younis for his 2nd beamer in the first World Cup match in 2003.

RIP.

Shep was a bloody good umpire for the majority of his career but like many others the standard dropped away with advancing years. Only Dickie Bird avoided that IMO. Just as well he didn't pass away on November 11 or he would have been buried in the hop position, challenging coffin makers world wide.

RIP the much loved and respected David Sheppard.

Sad to hear the new this morning on the passing of one of the games well respected characters.

Like locky said, I used to love him hopping on the triple figures and hearing his voice on stump cam. A true original. RIP Shep
I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.
