It's A Miracle !

Postby A Mum » Fri Oct 16, 2009 7:32 pm

I saw this on the news tonight, and all I can say is it's a miracle.
Brought tears to my eyes :(

Thank god the baby survived - would have been a horific thing for the mother and witnesses to see happen.
On the TV news they said the mother let go of the pusher momentarily and a gust of wind caught hold of it.

It is an amazing example of chance and luck that the child survived.
I thought prams had a brake you could engage if you were going to let go, even momentarily, though.

I don't agree that it is/was bad parenting at all,
And I can't believe half the comments on the news website.
It happened in a split second.
She only let go to pull down the bottom of her top or similar and a gust of wind came along.
And although she can't be held responsible for that I bet she beats herself up about it for a very long time,
So she doesn't need everyone else too as well.

It was what it was an accident - accidents happen all the time to all sorts of people unfortunately

I've had 3 kids - and you don't apply the brake to the pusher every single time you stop.
And I definitely don't call myself a 'careless parent'
I really think it's something about these 3 wheel pushers though,
They seem to 'move' much quicker than your conventional pusher.

wasnt there something about a 3 wheeler pusher near the old channel 7 building on the river torrens where a mother was running along the path that follows the river and she lost control over it and the pusher ended up in the river or something. was like 2-3 years ago??

We've had 2 highlighted cases in SA both involving the Torrens and 3 wheel pushers as far as I know.
Tragic and Very sad :(

Sh!t comment Punky, she let go of the pram for all of 1-2 seconds, if that...

It was just an unfortunate accident, that luckily had a very fortunate outcome !

I felt sick watching that footage, as i can see how easily something like that could happen.

i have 4 kids and think back to some things and think i was pretty lucky.. but that incident takes luck to another level.. those 3 wheeler pushers are designed to jog behind are they not??
anyone who says its the mothers fault must not have kids of there own..

Yes, they are designed to have less rolling resistance, and are predictably likely to move on any slope or with a light breeze.
Perhaps they should come with an automatic brake than comes on when you let go of the lever - I've seen them in other applications.

These kind of incidents give me nightmares.

Recentley we were holidaying in the gold coast and was staying on the 24th floor apartment which had a balcony. Despite not once opening the doors to the balcony and making sure they were locked at all times, i couldn't get the thought of my 9 month old daughter (who crawls everywhere) somehow falling over the edge. I was replaying the most stupid and random accidents eg, in my dream we decided to get photos of me and baylee(my daughter) out on the balcony and a big gust of wind would come up and i would drop her over the balcony.

It scared the living daylight out of me. Safe to say next time we go the GC we will be asking to stay in a room on the ground floor.

Maybe the answer to these 3 wheelers is a brake that is always on and a lever or trigger or something on the handle that you squeeze to release the brake, similar to what chainsaws and hedge trimmers have. That way if you let it go even for a second, the brake will come on.

Its an incident that the mother, and anyone else who was there will never forget. The train driver would have been helpless, having no chance to stop the train in time. It seems the kid is the luckiest one involved just because they would be too young to remember it.

Airport trolleys have that...you have to press down on the handle to make them move...something similar would be a good idea imho. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen people park a stroller without using a brake on sloping pavements and let go only to grab it again in time before it gets to the edge and the traffic.

Very, very lucky that the stroller landed squarely between the tracks (going by that video clip) so the train probably passed cleanly over him.

Another thing they should consider when designing these is that they ARE going to be used as shopping trolleys. Every time I go to town I see some poor little bugger take a backward tumble cos the parent has hung god knows how many shopping bags from the handles and as soon as they let go the whole lot flips over backwards...and it's only the amount of shopping that cushions the kid from smacking it's head on the ground, especially in the cheaper looking strollers.

even know i know the outcome isnt bad, it still makes me sick in the stomach watching this. you probably dont want to, but imagine if how the mum would feel if the little tacker hadnt pulled through. a split second of her taking her hand off the pram could have instantly changed her life, most probably for the worse.
