nicknames..australia

does the australian cricket team have an actual nickname ? (apart from 'the aussies') eg the redbacks
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

SACROSANT!
I could never imagine our team with a marketing-driven moniker. If someone mooted one, it would more than likely be howled down as an outrage to the prestige of the baggy green.

I think he means nick names more along the lines of:

New Zealand - Black Caps
South Africa - Proteas

They are the only two I can actually think of, in regards to international sides...

Proteas, yeah, they felt they had to change their name due to the old inferences of the Springboks. But is the "Black Caps" an actually nickname, or has it just sprung up because the "Baggy greens"?

I remember Steve Waugh and Ian Healy tried to get the nickname the EMUS off and running, espeically because it was one of the animals featured on the coat of arms on the baggy green. Didnt seem to have any luck with it.

Blues LOL.

Never for the national team, but the state sides all went for the marketing angle about 15 years ago to stimulate interest in the domestic competition. But we don't ever need to do that at national level.
