Here is the Cut and Paste of my thoughts on the subject from the SAFC board - clearly one of the applicants has now been hired, yet I do feel that I have been able to come up with a good list of candidates that would be good for the club.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter German - played for North Melbourne, won the flag with Subiaco twice. German got Subiaco to their first of their current era flags. He is currently coaching at VFL side the Casey Scorpions whom are Affiliated to St Kilda in the VFL. Its worth pointing out that West Adelaide Coach Andy Collins was in a similar situation coaching at Coburg under Richmond when he was headhunted by the WAFC and I feel German would also bring modern AFL coaching methods as well as the track record of rebuilding Subiaco to the flag and i feel he would be a strong candiadate for the role that would match it with any current SANFL Coach.
Darren Trevena - Darren doesnt have the track record of finals coaching in the SANFL that I spoke of earlier, yet we would be crazy not to interview him for the position if he was in fact interested. He is a long term SAFC player, he coached the Tassie Devils (Tassies Team in the VFL). Was the SANFL U/18 Development Coach and is a Current Assistant Coach at the Power.
Scott Watters - Has fairly extensive AFL playing experience with the Eagles, Swans and Freo and led the side that German built up to the 07 and 08 flags, is rumoured to have AFL coaching ambitions and will probably get his go in the not to distant future at either West Coast or Freo.
John Dimmer - If I was going to reccomend anyone for the position, John Dimmer would be my first choice of all the current candidates. He is a very very experienced WAFL coach who coached his side to two Flags at WAFL level, took a break and has returned and taken South Fremantle to the 05 and now the 09 Flag. What is interesting about Dimmer is that South Fremantle were not unlike were South are now. Outside of the finals group in a very competitive competition and the club in all sorts of problems. Dimmer walked into the club and set a rebuilding plan in process that has paid them back two Premierships. He is IMO the ideal candidate for the Panthers considering our current problems - could well bring several good players with him at the same time.
Phil Carman - Took Sturt a complete and utter basket case with no funds and made the competitive although did not win the flag in the SANFL. Cons is that he has been out of the game for some time and would be a gamble, probably to much of a gamble for South at this stage of the game, yet again someone who deserves every chance to make their presentation to the club and make their case having done the job before to the larger half.
Michael Nunan - A hard man and a head kicker pure and simple. Would either sort out the SAFC or walk out as Cahill did. Took North to the flag after taking the reigns again at a side a long time out of it. I would be surprised if he wanted the job being as his horse stables are incredibly successfull, yet would not be dissapointed if he did get the job.
Ron Fuller, his record speaks for itself, Won the flag on one occassion after taking over the Eagles and contested Several others. A current SANFL finals Coach. Very Experienced and would be a huge assett to the club if he was given the job.
Gary Ayres, clearly recognised as the Ex Coach of the Crows. Played in the 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, and 1991 Premierships, As a coach took Geelong to the Grand Final loss against Carlton. Coached the Crows then Assistant Coached at Essendon, moved on to Port Melbourne one of the few sides in the VFL not affiliated to an AFL side. He took Pt Melbourne to the Minor Premiership in 08 and the Preliminary Final in 09. Pt Melbourne dont have the luxury of having AFL players allocated to their side and I feel Ayres has done a fantastic job with the club and with his wealth of experience would be a strong candidate to coach at the SAFC. John Reid clearly knows him fairly well and would be ideally placed to make a call if he is the man for the job at South.
