yeah but we're all playing each other in the same comp, so it's still an even playing field.

Yeah, but the comp now isnt what is was circa 1990. ( Players quality wise )

BUT MY POINT IS BEING MISSED. If Salisbury under 15's won 400 grannies in a row, that would be a far better achievement than Us winning 8 in 10 years.

so shouldnt that make it easier for port to win premierships now as well? how is the competition not being stronger only to centrals benefit? if the whole competition level has dropped it should make it "easier" for all sides to win the grand final. if the competition is lesser why havent port continued their winning ways against these "inferior" sides?

The overall standard of competition has obviously dropped but that should make it neither harder or easier to win a flag.

Agreed - todays players are fitter, better trained, more skillful and better coached than back then.

The question was what do we rate as the better achievement, not who is better. One of The Williams sisters might win 10 Wimbledons, this is a far better achievement than Federer winning 7.

That's right. Central of today would run rings around Sturt and Port sides of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

The games plans and fitness levels have changed so much... Having said that, take one of the great Sturt or Port teams, give them the same training and game plans of today and I think Central would struggle to get within 15 goals...

ok, so if it is neither harder nor easier to win a flag now, compared to when port did it, how is it relevant in the discussion on wether centrals acheivements are better than ports??? :?

Even better, I think 12 Grand Final's appearances in 15 years is even more remarkable!

I am - you just have to watch the old footage of games. All the players did was get the ball then dob it forward and hope for the best. Foot and hand skills far better today. Marking and bodywork probably about the same. The only skills that were better back then were drop-kicking and dodgy hits behind the play.

Maybe 40 or 50 years ago, but the grand final teams from the mid to late 80's were very strong.

Not sure if you're old enough to have seen the North/Glenelg grand finals of the mid 80's and Port/Glenelg in 88 and 90. Not much drop kicking back then, skills were significantly better than they are today.

Yeah GWW I was thinking of 40 to 50 years ago. As for the 90's the skills are similar to the current decade but I still maintain that fitness, training, coaching and tactics have improved markedly since the 90's.
