yeah heard him say the same thing that he hates flying....but not sure thats the major reason hes not coaching AFL, I think he really loves the SANFL competition and particulary Centrals..

Then you have guys who were legends of the AFL like Timmy Watson,Danny Frawley, and too many others cant mention them all that turned out to be complete duds.
I agree Roy may have to spend a bit of time to get a handle on the system, but no doubt he would have the nous and leadership qualities to excel as an AFL coach once familiar with it.

Gerard Neesham is NOT a good example.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

LOL Barto, yeah give that one for sure, but in all honesty at least Freo had a crack and excited fans whilst under him,and lets face it his record wouldnt be much worse if any than Mark Harvey, who played god knows how many games for the Bombers and spent what felt like eons as an assistant.

Give yourself an upper-cut....

Their would be some plonka on the board or Footy Committee who'd tell him he's doing it wrong and white ant him because South people know best....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

The Doggies have struck gold with Laird if it's true that he has no AFL ambition, good coaches like him that are happy with their lot are one in a million.

I think he loves his life here. Why would he want to move on just to prove something to people he doesn't care about?

Roy Laird is a good coach with a great list!

Everyone thought Jack Cahill was the next best thing with the Maggies, then the Power - Didn't Happen - Didn't have the list.

Roy has had the cattle.....If he can take South to a flag in 2-3 years then I'll eat humble Pie.
As long as Roy Stays at Centrals, they will rule football. The last 10 years have got them the money and the attraction they need to recruit well and as long as Roy is prepared to coach they will continue to win - Provided they have the list!

Is he AFL coach material?
Until he ever coaches at AFL level we will never know.

Suggestions that he is in the top 5 coaches in Australia I have to disagree with. The top 16 coaches are senior coaches at AFL clubs. You can make that 17 with McKenna coaching Gold Coast.
So Laird is at number 18 at best.

Before ever comparing him with Neil Craig and any other AFL coach, Laird will have to coach a club with the expectations of 50,000 members over him rather than 2-3 thousand.

For the record, IMHO, if Laird ever went to the AFL, he will do very well for himself. He chooses not to and must be respected for that.

it's a bit like saying would Gary Macintosh be able to play afl (back then).

Before anyone replies I know he played state football so proved he could compete.

I think Alan Stewart, the first coach to get Centrals to a Grand Final never played at league level (anyone confirm), only reserves, but had a huge impact on Centrals and the path they are on today.
