Here is the Press Release...

PORT ADELAIDE MAGPIES APPOINT NEW COACH

The Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club is pleased to announce that Tony Bamford has been appointed senior coach for a three-year term starting in season 2010.

Tony is a former Magpies player of 78 games. Recruited to the club from Kedron (QAFL) in 1996, he was recognised on ground as a courageous midfielder who consistently prepared himself physically and mentally to perform at his best.

After retiring as a player, Tony worked at the SANFL as a Development Officer before joining the Magpies on a full-time basis as Talent Manager, a role in which he was responsible for the club’s junior development program.

He coached Port’s Under 17s Grand Final team in 2008 and oversaw the management of Port’s Centre of Excellence program in 2009, leading the Under 18s to the Grand Final last Sunday.

Port Adelaide Magpies CEO Greg Edwards today commended the appointment.

“Tony is a meticulously prepared and knowledgeable coach recognised throughout the SANFL for his ability to develop young footballers and young men,” he said.

“We have a very inexperienced but exciting list which Tony can take forward into the future to build a new successful PAMFC era.

“Tony will also remain in the role as Talent Manager, giving him the opportunity to continue to manage and oversee our junior development programs and the movement of the best talent into our senior ranks.”

Was there a phone-throwing competition as part of the selection criteria?

Perhaps you'd like to tell the Magpies where they can buy some cheap, brown paper bags?

Not sure what I expect of Bamford. I expected Ginever to be pretty good as coach but they just really lack cattle at the moment. Bamford's first priorities will surely be to restore Clayton to his best and add a few more blokes around him to help out. Sorely short of players and too reliant on just a few blokes, some of whom are possibly near the end (Ah Chee in particular). Really need to find some medium to long term players who are in the better half of SANFl players IMHO.

Smart decision by the club as he was already an employee, with the money they had to offer it was unlikely anyone with AFL experience was going to apply.
