TOP 5 OF 2000'S

Postby eaglehaslanded » Mon Oct 05, 2009 4:14 pm

Obviously Central has dominated the 2000's but I come to thinking about what the top 5 of the 2000's would be. Here's what I come up with:

1: Central (10 Grand Finals & 8 Premierships
2: Eagles (5 Grand Finals & 1 Premiership)
3: Sturt (2 Grand Finals & 1 Premiership)
4: North (1 Grand Final)
5: Port (Played 6/10 finals series)

What are others thoughts ?

Who voted for Norwood - surely you can't be serious. They made 3 of 10 finals series and didn't finish above 3rd. West at least played in 4 of 10 finals series and played off in a GF.

I know they were dismal in the first half of the decade but they have been dominant in the last couple of years and have made a Grand Final which is more than Port did. Only an opinion...

Top 3 is very easy

Centrals (10 GF's, 8 Premierships)
Eagles (5GF's, 1 Premiership, 9 Finals series)
Sturt (2GF's, 1 Premiership, 8 Finals series)

4-5 are pretty tough

I've given 4 to North (1 GF, 5 Finals Series, but 1 wooden spoon)

5th I wasn't sure whether to give to West (1 GF, 4 finals series, but 4 wooden spoons) or Glenelg (1GF, 3 finals series, but 3 wooden spoons). However, I've decided to just give it to West.

So my ladder for the 2000's is

Centrals
Eagles
Sturt
North
West

Glenelg
Port (6 finals series)
Norwood (4 finals series, 1 wooden spoon)
South (1 finals series, 1 wooden spoon)
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

True, true - I didn't know how to pick the last couple apart. West and Glenelg both played in a GF but Port made more finals series.

I am not on my computer so don't have the exact stats handy but of the 60 or so finals since 1999; Sturt, Centrals and the Eagles have won something like 44 of the them. 75% won by only 3 teams  Centrals have 22 of the 44.

I think North were 4th ranked and after that I can't remember but it was down to teams that had won only about 2 finals in that time.

An amazing era of dominance by 1 team but also by those 3 teams v the other 6.

If you'd told me at the end of 2003 (our worst ever and we were almost closed down) that most people would rate North the 4th best side of the decade I would have had you committed to an asylum! How bad are the 5 clubs below them going?

Using Spelly's stats above if you score a finals win as +1 and a loss as -1 teh table looks like:

Central 20
South 0
Eagles -1
Sturt -2
North -2
Norwood -2
Glenelg -3
West -4
Port -6

That might be a bit flattering to the doggies because their 2 losses were in GFs which should probably be scored higher. But it makes South look good

How are sturt ahead on this poll? Eagles are miles ahead of them over the entire decade.

Top 3 are very easy.
1. Dogs. No argument against that.
2. Eagles. Made 50% of the GFs over the 10 years, missed finals only last year IIRC and often were a top 3 side.
3. Sturt. Only other side to make the GF more than once and winning a flag makes then 3rd in my book.

After that it's much tougher. West, Glenelg and North made 1 GF each, but all 3 were really, really bad at some time as well. Minor round wins, finals wins, final placings etc would probably throw up totally different sides for 4th and 5th. I think west were too bad for too long, and were mid range most of the time they weren't terrible while North were a decent side for longer than Glenelg were. So I would go for
4. North.
5. Glenelg.
6. West.

Can't really see any reason for Norwood, Port or South sitting ahead of those 3 even though they all had their moments of course. South were so bad for most of the time, and barely better than mid table at best so they can win another spoon. Port and Norwood are so similar in my view, both had patches of being reasonable, but I think Port on percentage. Just a little more being decent and a little less being crap than Norwood. So the last placings on my ladder go to
7. Port.
8. Norwood.
9. South.
