If you take that point of view, hawks then you'd just name the winning GF team. The premiership is the award for finals performance and those blokes get medals. The teams of the year are simply for minor round performance to reward the guys across the 23 rounds which are relatively prizeless in the context of the season despite making up the bulk of footy played in a year (IMHO).

I actually can't recall Roy ever being named coach of the year. Would like ot stand corrected but it seems most years someone get a good minor round performance in that most experts seem to rate higher than Roy's achievements. Funny considering if we had an SANFL draft for the coaches all the clubs would put Roy as their #1 pick (IMHO of course).

Not all Grahaml .... All it would do is give you just another couple of weeks to make sure that all the best candidates from ALL clubs are given the opportunity to make it in the Team of the Year (This years footy season doesnt finish until Sunday night).

The AFL all-australian team does not take into account finals.

Naming it after the GF defeats the purpose, its a tool used by both the SANFL and The Advertiser to promote themselves in the leadup to the Grand Final.

It would be the same as holding the Brownlow or Magarey after the GF.

Phil, it seems that it should be named in the week following Round 23. Perhaps Fuller may have then been named coach of the year in 2006?

Possibly Spell Check but a logistical nightmare.

The 23 rounds need to be played,
Then Advertiser Crew need to meet and decide on the team
Then they have to invite the players named to the event with enough notice so they turn up.

I can't see anything wrong with the Advertiser Team of the Year, nor the coach. Well thought out selections, and I honestly cannot think of any player outside the 22 who should be in it.

So perhaps, the first two can be decided within the first week. Then the invitations are made at the end of the week so the announcement and get together is at the end of the next week - Friday before the Semis.

What is more important to a football clubs and supporters .... Minor Round Premierships or winning a GF ? To me it's a GF so why not select the team after the GF and not have a B grade (or 2nd place) award  (IMHO)

Using that logic you would keep giving Magarey votes during the finals as well.

Like others have said, it is an award that is selected on minor round performances. That is when everyone is available for selection, it should have the best players in the league, and likewise the (arguably) best coach as well, would you pick a state side on their current performance or would you look at the previous grand final?

Scott Dutschke could consider himself unlucky AH, and there could be a case for Sam Rowe, Brad Murray, Bronik Davies and a couple more I reckon...

Okay, consider whose place any of those guys would take in the team. Let me know that, and I'll see if I think they are unlucky. Just remember, there are only 22 spots in the team.
