2009 SANFL Advertiser Team of The Year

Postby Big Phil » Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:13 pm

FF: Chad O'Sullivan (CD) - Brant Chambers (St) - Ben Warren(SA)
HF: Michael Coad (St) - Ruory Kirkby (Gl) - Tristian Gum (St)
CL: Rhys Archard (NA) - Jade Sheedy (St) - Mark McKenzie (WWT)
HB: Ben Mules (Gl) - Ryan Ferguson (WA) - Paul Thomas (CD)
FB: Damian Cunningham (NA) - Wayde Mills (Gl) - Scott McGlone (St)

1R: Trevor Cranston (Gl) - Ty Allen (Gl) - James Ezard (WA)

INT: James Meiklejohn (PA) - Brett Zorzi (Nwd) - Ben Kane (Gl) - James Allan(NA)

COACH: Mark Mickan (Gl)

Not a bad looking side that one, and good to see every club have a representative in the side as well. Pretty strong down the line with plenty of running midfielders, a potent forward line and solid defence. Pretty balanced side IMO.

Advertiser Team of the Year

Postby Wedgie » Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:14 pm

James Allan wins the Advertiser Player of the Year award, the Budget Player of the Year award and most who saw him play the last 3 games would agree he probably should have been the Magarey Medalist and yet can't make the starting 18 let alone 23 which is all you can have in an SANFL team?
Cunningham?
(North fans gave Jimmy Allan 55 votes this year and Cunningham 9.5)
Sturt and Glenelg have 11 players combined but Central only 2?
How many games did Warren play in the pocket and if not does just over 2 goals a game from full forward justify putting him in someone else's position? (apologies if he played the year out of FP, haven't seen much of South)
I assume the minor premier coach gets a spot not matter what, some would think that someone takes the best squad for the last 2 years to no premierships might not be deserving and perhaps Roy Laird or Luke Norman with what they've had at their disposal?
I can only assume players on an AFL list aren't eligible.

Not a bad team.

Allan should be a starter and although Cunningham has played OK, I doubt he's a candidate for this team. Mules has generally played back pocket, I think (?) and should take his spot, with another player coming in.

I queried the automatic selection of O'Hara in all the other teams and it's interesting he's not in this one.

Apart from the usual players playing out of position, the rest is OK.

Oh, I know you're waiting for it, so I won't let you down. I'm not such a bad judge of a CHB after all ;)

Cheers mate, wasn't aware of that but now I can blame the coaches and not the Advertiser. ;)
Or perhaps I can blame them for having the poll before the season is finished. ;)

The coach of the year is the coach that gets the flag no question about that. However Laird got Centrals into another finals series another GF.So if it has to be done before the GF Laird wins it for mine

As stated above, the coaches vote on it themselves! Nothing to do with where they finish.

The coaches will always vote for the minor premier - its an objective test, rather than the subjectivity associated with determining who did best with what list...

Anyway, with all the criticism heaped at the Bays since Sunday's loss, it could be argued that Mickan's selection was well deserved. He took a bunch of guys obviously not up to finals footy to a minor premiership... an amazing coaching achievement!! (joking...)

Good side, apart from Ken McGregor not being in it.

Do you think McGregor did enough to get in? I'm not sure he was the dominant player many people expected him but perhaps he was measured against the expectations and not his actual performance...

Probably against expectations I would say. I just think about his versatility throughout the season and believed he should have been on the bench for it. He probably spent about a third of the season maximum up forward (only about 8 or 9 times he went there for half a match), and still kicked 23 goals. He read the play very well, often he would take the relieving mark in defence. He was much more suited to one-on-one; looking a bit slow otherwise, was his only weakness. He would be great up forward as a permanent option (which is why a key backman must be recruited).

Talking about versatility, Mark McKenzie has been selected in three different positions out of the four selections in this team:

2004: Half back flank
2006: Centre half back
2008: Centre half back
2009: Wing

And rarely starts a game in any of those positions?

Also, what's with four interchange players?
