If you could go back to one year in music....

...what would it be? (apologies if this has been done before)

I was born in 1973, but am a definitive 70's and 80's music child. My collection is, simply, dominated by these years, with many artists having all of their vinyl albums in there. My parents lived and breathed music, so I was very lucky (some would say extremely unlucky) to be exposed to many artists all throughout childhood.

I'd love to go back to 1974. It's the year Supertramp release "Crime of The Century", the Eagles are about to really burst onto the scene, Little River Band likewise, Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" yet to come out, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of The Moon" has just been released, with "Wish You Were Here" soon to be released, and its less than three years before punk really starts to explode, so would get to see the beginning of the Sex Pistols, the Saints, the Clash etc - all musical events that I wish I just old enough to remember properly at the time.

I was born in 1974 and like you was brought up on vinyl and cassette's and have a great collection of vinyl. Im a 60's, 70's and 80's fan as well.
I have thought of this question before....if I could go in the car in "Back to the future" with Flux capacitor working of course - what year would it be??

1977
Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" ,The Eagles, Boz Scaggs and Little River Band were huge with Mainstream rock.
KISS was gaining popularity in Australia. T-Rex, Split Enz and David Bowie were around so you had a bit of glam rock.
Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop with "The Idiot", The Saints, Radio Birdmen, The Damned were around so you had Punk Rock.
AC/DC with "Let there be rock", Aerosmith, The Angels, Cheap Trick, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Rolling Stones - so you had you hard rock music.
Disco was just about to it the music charts.....The Jacksons, Bee Gees etc...
Then you had your NWOBM (New Wave of British Metal) coming out...like Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Thin Lizzy etc...
The Stranglers, XTC, Elvis Costello....
The New Romantic movement was just beginning...

It was a great year with so many styles and genres.....

Well, working chronologically, as I was born in 1975 I would have to agree with the above.

1970 would be mine.

To see the likes of Zeppelin,Sabbath and Floyd at full flight along with to opportunity to decide if KISS were 5hit hot or not as opposed to just being told they were.

My parents listed to rock'n'roll from the 50/60's while my older brother drip fed me the Zeppelin,Sabbath,Budgie,Floyd,Midnight Oil,The Doors.

So, now if we can find someone born in 76...

I'd love to go back when Johnny Cash, Elvis etc were doing all them shows on the road as seen in "I Walk The Line."

Also, would've love to seen Pink Floyd, The Who, ACDC and all them power bands of the old days when they were in full flight.

I'd not want to go back there necessarily because of the Nevermind album but more to watch the impact that that album had and to be on the scene when 'alternative' music became the new hip and resulted in many older bands that were still playing gaining the recognition they deserved (one example: Sonic Youth).

Was watching an Australian music documentary today, and didn't really think before about the impact that 1976 had on music. The Saints release "I'm Stranded"; Peter Garrett moves to Sydney to finish his law degree and his band changes its name from Farm to Midnight Oil; Little River Band release their second album "After Hours" and start making serious inroads into the US market ("Its A Long Way There" hits the US charts, to start their breakthrough); Air Supply record "Love And Other Bruises", the album that brings them also into the American market and Mental As Anything form.
