Football is not a verb

... but gutted is.

Or more correctly, it is the past participle of the verb "to gut".

One might also use it in an adjectival sense, applying to the object of "to gut" (i.e that which was gutted) rather than the subject (who does the gutting).

Or, even more simply, one might simply use it to describe exactly how I feel right now. :(
