The Advertisers in-depth write up of the match is now available ...

The Advertiser wrote:CENTRAL DISTRICT has booked it's tenth consecutive grand final berth with a shock win over Glenelg in the second semi-final yesterday. Continuing their reign over the SANFL, the Bulldogs snuck back from being 20 points down at three quarter time to claim a two-point win over the Tigers.

Although Central was competitive early, the Elizabeth side was unable to convert opportunities and allowed Glenelg to dominate the second and third terms.

However, the reigning premiers ignited their trademark spark in the final quarter to earn the win and go straight through to the 2009 grand final.

Coach Roy Laird said the win was among the best in his history with the club and that the team would welcome next weekend off before the grand final on Sunday, October 4.

The Dogs will expect the return of gun midfielder Ian Callinan and solid defender Andrew Hayes for the premiership match.

Minor premiers Glenelg will now face Sturt in the preliminary final next Sunday after the Double Blues overcame Woodville-West Torrens in the first semi-final by 10 points.

One extra note about the umpires... we go to see a game of football, not wait a ridiculous amount of time for the umpire to bounce the ball after each goal.

OK, let me explain better.

I hated Glenelg with a passion after 85 and 86! All this respect and admiration for Centrals sounds dangerously like lowering expectations. I think you guys have earned the right to expect to win. They do and I think that plays a part in what's been happening this last 10 seasons.

OK, you don't want to say it publicly and have it thrown back in your face but if you don't expect to win then how will you? If you expect to win you don't throw your hands up in the air over their greatness. You get angry about losing!

In fairness, maybe I shouldn't be assuming what you guys post on here = the thinking within the GFC or = what you privately think. I just don't want the coach or the players to be in awe of Centrals otherwise it's Groundhog day all over again.

To all you snobby Glenelg or Sturt supporters your jibes at us and the Gowans twins ( we all know you would luv them in your teams ) are becoming so tiresome and I throw out the challenge to you to come up with something new.

You have a fortnight. :D

I thought they we're OK, not perfect but OK. To me they favoured the team that got front position. Us for the majority of the game and then in the crucial last quarter when the Dogs did the hard yards they got the decisions.

Not being disrespectful am Bays, but of course you did - you got the armchair ride for 3 qtrs. Not just because you were in front, you got the soft ones en masse. We did in the last qtr.

As I said, not being disrespectful to you at all. Umpiring is subjective...
...the Bays (bar the sensation 33 McConnell, pure gold) were terrific and most unlucky not to win today.

This was another cracker of a game. Great watching from a neutral viewpoint. Glenelg are well and truly capable. I think they will beat Sturt next week and I still give them a good chance of winning the premiership. Central are just brilliant. What a gutsy, classy, determined team. It really is a privilege to watch them in this era.

Yeah but history shows if we make it to the grannie against you its a gimme for us...

ST I said OK, not good, great or bad for that matter. I didn't agree with everything I saw in the first three quarters but by and large they rewarded the bloke who got front position, which IMO is what should occur.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

IMO it will now be more of a mental battle for the Bays. Looking at some of their players afterwards, I got the feeling they don't know what else they have to do to win. Apart from a couple of shots at goal (and McConnell), it is hard to see how or where they could have played much better. Kirkby and Murphy really impressed today.

100% correct, FH.
While we may have burst out of the blocks, we pride ourselves on Ginever's famous comment that he repeated over and over and over again - Port's mantra - "LATE GOALS ARE GREAT GOALS" - they can't be answered back.

Glenelg kicked the last two goals in time on of the first two quarters - we couldn't hit back. They got the wriggle on in the third, we ended with that desperate goal to keep it to 20 points. Momentum goes with it. Rest is history.

I'd be gobsmacked if we could draw three rabbits from the hat. Who's to say we won't be the hunted from a lead in a fortnight's time...

But with Griffin, Hayes and Callinan to be available for selection, we will have a strong, rested side going into the GF. Bays will be better for the outing too.

Note to Shane Harris: FFS, three replacements please. Deplorable standard of umpiring, who Glenelg bias for 3 quarters was ridiculous. The 'level ups' came with equally ridiculous decisions our way in the last quarter. Last weeks trio were excellent, can we have them back!

Agree about the umpiring ST.

And the second game was far quicker than the early one today ;)

No worries. I don't like singling out umpiring standard for the quality ofd a match, but this would have been that much better if they had let much more flow, and not overumpired.

Dare I say, if McConnell plays in a fortnight (indeed, if the Bays are there in a fortnight - and they should be) you have far less chance than if you put the 33 guernsey on training cones. At least they get in the way from time to time.

I am expecting the 2009 season finale to be the best GF encounter I've been to...

No doubt the game was over umpired, one thing that frustrated me in the 3rd term was the umpires looking straight into the sun when the ball was in the shade on the Members wing, missed at least 3 free kicks cause of their poor positioning and couldnt see the action

You make a vaild and pertinent point. I commented to the bay fans behind us, and my siser in front of us that there was half a ground batched in sunshine that they were obsessed umpiring from, while they could so easily have gone to the shaded side and not had to guard the sun from there eyes. After all, we spent 75% of the match guarding sun from our eyes in the outer.

Congrats to the Bay fans behind us, and the Dog fans around us. Some great comments, and the cheer in the crowd was generally terrific. I got a chuckle with one Bay fan who yelled out "you f__king beauty" ever time they goaled - and a loud "f__k no" when the last quarter turned.

Can someone tell me why opposition fans call the Gowans "AFL rejects"? They are, and as a result they're in our side, and their 15th consecutive senior GFs each, having been on the end of 5 successive losses before arriving in 2000. The comment is puzzling - it's the reason that any SANFl side is successful, because these players couldn't quite make it at the next level.

:D :D

Already commented about that somewhere on this website... not confident at all. I think Glenelg will win well next week.

So you'll be up against the Tigers and their 4-13 GF record...
